Sir Philip Parker-a-Morley-Long, 3rd Baronet
Sir Philip Parker-a-Morley-Long, 3rd Baronet (1682 – 20 January 1741) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons for Harwich from 1715 to 1734. Early life Parker was born at Arwarton, Suffolk, the son of Sir Philip Parker, 2nd Baronet, and Mary Fortrey, daughter of Samuel Fortrey. Career In 1710 he took the name of Long on inheriting the estate of Whaddon in Wiltshire from his great-uncle Sir Walter Long. The original Coat of Long was, through some error, allowed to him by the College of Arms. He successfully stood for parliament in the 1715 general election being returned as Member of Parliament (MP) for Harwich. He held the seat until 1734. In 1740 he founded the Erwarton Almshouses close to his home in Erwarton. John Thynne Howe, 2nd Baron Chedworth
John Thynne Howe, 2nd Baron Chedworth (18 February 1714 – 9 May 1762) was an English peer and the eldest son of John Howe, 1st Baron Chedworth. Education He was educated at John Roysse's Free School in Abingdon, (now Abingdon School). He later studied at Pembroke College, Oxford. Peerage He succeeded to the title in 1742 on the death of his father, and married on 23 September 1751, Martha Parker-a-Morley-Long, daughter of Sir Philip Parker-a-Morley-Long, 3rd Baronet of Arwarton, Suffolk. The family seat was Stowell Park, Gloucestershire, and his London residence was 25 Leicester Square. There were no children from his marriage and he was succeeded in the barony by his younger brother Henry Frederick Howe, 3rd Baron Chedworth. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Charles Stanhope (1673–1760)
Charles Stanhope (16731760) was an English barrister and Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1717 to 1741. Deeply implicated in transactions related to the South Sea Company, possibly concerned with political corruption, he was strongly defended by those in government, and was acquitted of all charges brought against him. Early life Stanhope was the second son of John Stanhope of Elvaston, Derbyshire, and his wife Dorothy Agard, daughter of Charles Agard of Foston, Derbyshire. He was admitted at the Inner Temple and was called to the bar in 1703. He succeeded his elder brother Thomas to the family estates in 1730. Career Stanhope was the cousin of James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope who made him his under-secretary in 1714. Carteret Leathes (July 1698 – 1780), of Oakley House, near Harwich, Essex, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from1727 to 1747. Early life Leathes was born Mussenden, the eldest son of John Mussenden of Hillsborough, County Down and his wife Jane Leathes, daughter of Adam Leathes. He matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford in 1717. He married Loveday Garrod, daughter of S. Garrod of Lincolnshire. In 1727, he succeeded his uncle William Leathes (resident at Brussels c.1718-24) and assumed name of Leathes 1727. Political career Leathes’ inheritance included an estate near Harwich, where he intended to stand at the 1727 British general election, but in the event was returned as Member of Parliament for Sudbury. In 1733 he was described as ‘a friend to the Government, a sure one, and has not given a vote against us’. Benedict Calvert, 4th Baron Baltimore
Benedict Leonard Calvert, 4th Baron Baltimore (21 March 1679 – 16 April 1715) was an English nobleman and politician. He was the second son of Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron Baltimore (1637–1715) by Jane Lowe, and became his father's heir upon the death of his elder brother Cecil in 1681. The 3rd Lord Baltimore was a devout Roman Catholic, and had lost his title to the Province of Maryland shortly after the events of the Glorious Revolution in 1688, when the Protestant monarchs William III and Mary II acceded to the British throne. Benedict Calvert made strenuous attempts to have his family's title to Maryland restored by renouncing Roman Catholicism and joining the Church of England. In February 1715 Benedict became the 4th Baron Baltimore upon the death of his father, and he immediately petitioned King George I for the restoration of Maryland to his control.
