Sipaliwini River
Sipaliwini River is a river of Suriname, the main source of the Courantyne River. It gives its name to the village of Sipaliwini Savanna and to the Sipaliwini District. It flows through the village of Kwamalasamutu. The name translates to thornback ray (''sipari'') river in the local Maroon dialect. Tumuk Humak Mountains
The Tumuk Humak Mountains ( nl, Toemoek-Hoemakgebergte, pt, Serra do Tumucumaque, french: Monts Tumuc Humac) are a mountain range in South America, stretching about east–west in the border area between Brazil in the south and Suriname and French Guiana in the north. In the language of the Apalam and Wayana peoples, ''Tumucumaque'' means "the mountain rock symbolizing the struggle between the shaman and the spirits". The range is very remote and almost inaccessible. Both the Maroni and Oyapock rivers originate in the Tumuk Humak Mountains. The Maroni ( nl, Marowijne) forms the entire (disputed) border between Suriname and French Guiana, and the Oyapock ( pt, Oiapoque) most of the border between French Guiana and Brazil. Courantyne River
The Courantyne/Corentyne/Corantijn River is a river in northern South America in Suriname and Guyana. It is the longest river in the country and creates the border between Suriname and the East Berbice-Corentyne region of Guyana. Sipaliwini Savanna, also called Sipaliwini, is a Tiriyó village on the Sipaliwini River in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname. The village lies next to the Sipaliwini Airstrip. The nearest village in Suriname is Alalapadu which is located 60 kilometres north on a map, but due to the twists and turns of the river, the town of Kwamalasamutu which lies 83 kilometres west is easier to reach. Sipaliwini is the largest district of Suriname, located in the south. Sipaliwini is the only district that does not have a regional capital, as it is directly administered by the national government in Paramaribo. Kwamalasamutu
Kwamalasamutu, also Kwamalasamoetoe, is a Tiriyó Amerindian village in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname, and home to the granman (paramount chief) of the northern Trios. Kwamalasamutu is the biggest village of the Tiriyó tribe. History The village was built in 1971, because Alalapadu was getting too small. The population is estimated at about 1,100 as of 2020. Kwamalasamutu has a school, clinic, and a Baptist church, and since 2010 it has access to the telephone network. The economy is based on small-scale agriculture. The village is also home to small groups of the Wai Wai tribe. The last two speakers of the Mawayana language are in Kwamalasamutu as of 2015. Thornback Ray
The thornback ray (''Raja clavata''), or thornback skate, is a species of ray fish in the family Rajidae. Distribution The Thornback ray is found in the Atlantic coastal waters of Europe and western Africa. It is also present from south Africa to the southwestern Indian Ocean and in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. It is native possibly as far south as Namibia and South Africa. Its natural habitats are open large seas and shallow seas. It is sometimes seen trapped in large estuarine pools at low tide. The thornback ray is probably one of the most common rays encountered by divers. Habitat The thornback ray is usually found on sedimentary seabeds such as mud, sand or gravel at depths between 10-60m.
