The Sioux Empire Conference was a high school athletic conference formed by schools in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. History The Sioux Empire Conference was established on October 20, 1964, with Central Lyon Community School District, Sioux Center Community Schools, and West Sioux Community School District of Iowa as founding members, alongside Canton Public Schools and Vermillion Public Schools of South Dakota. Central Lyon Community School District
Central Lyon Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Rock Rapids, Iowa. The district is completely within Lyon County, and serves Rock Rapids and the town Doon, and the surrounding rural areas. Brent Jorth has served as superintendent since 2019. Sioux Center Community School District is a rural public school district located in Sioux Center, Iowa. It is entirely within Sioux County, and serves Sioux Center and the surrounding rural areas. Gary McEldowney has served as superintendent since 2018. Schools Kinsey Elementary Kinsey Elementary includes grades TK-4. TK is a half-day transitional kindergarten. West Sioux Community School District
West Sioux Community School District, or West Sioux Schools, is a rural public school district headquartered in Hawarden, Iowa. It operates Ireton Elementary School, Hawarden Elementary School, and West Sioux Middle School/High School in Hawarden. The district is mostly in Sioux County with a small section in Plymouth County. The district includes Hawarden, Ireton, and Chatsworth. History The first country school in Sioux County, Iowa, was built by 1869 in Calliope. The educational institution was rebuilt in 1881 and moved in 1883. After the third building burned down, the school relocated again. By the 1890s, Hawarden High School had been built. A consolidated school district known as the Chatsworth–Hawarden–Ireton Rural Community School District was proposed in 1958. Siouxland Conference
The Siouxland Conference is a ten team high school athletic conference in the northwest corner of Iowa, consisting of schools ranging from the smallest class (1A) to the third largest class (3A), and known for its prominence in small school basketball. Members Incoming Member Common cooperatives History The Siouxland Conference was founded in 1952 and began play in the 1953–54 school year. Originally the league was made up of: Inwood, George and Rock Rapids from Lyon County; Orange City, and Hawarden from Sioux County; and Akron and Le Mars Gehlen from Plymouth County. Rock Valley replaced Augustana Academy of Canton, South Dakota, in 1960. West Sioux of Hawarden left the conference in 1965, and rejoined for a short period in the 1970s. Boyden–Hull became a conference member by 1965. Sioux Center, formerly of the Sioux Empire Conference, and Central Lyon of Rock Rapids joined the Siouxland Conference in 1967.
