Sint-Lievenscollege
The Sint-Lievenscollege is a Catholic group of schools in Ghent, Belgium, composed of a number of elementary and primary schools, a secondary general school ('humaniora') and a secondary vocational trade school. History 2 October 1865 was the starting point of education at the then ''Institut Saint-Liévin''. On the initiative of the diocese of Ghent, this new school was created for the education of Catholic middle-class boys. The bishop of Ghent, Henricus Franciscus Bracq, put the school under the protection of Ghent's patron Saint Livinus. On the first school day, 24 pupils were present. Until 1881 the college was located in the birthplace of Philippe Piers de Raveschoot (mayor of Ghent 1819-25 and 1865-81) in the Koningstraat. In 1881 the school moved to its present location on the Zilverenberg, close to the confluence of the rivers Leie and Scheldt. Luc De Vos
Luc De Vos (12 July 1962 – 29 November 2014) was a Belgian musician and writer, best known as the lead singer of the Dutch-language alternative rock formation Gorki and as a guest in multiple television shows. He also voiced VW bus in the Flemish version of the Disney movie ''Cars''. He died of acute organ failure on the 29 November 2014 in his working apartment in Ghent. Early life De Vos was born in 1962 in the village of Wippelgem near Ghent as the youngest of 7 children. He had his secondary education at the Sint-Lievenscollege in Ghent. As a toddler, he knew that he wanted to become a rockstar, a job he described as a privilege rather than a job, once he had it. Career Musical career With his original band Gorky, De Vos ended third in Humo's Rock Rally in 1990. Henricus Franciscus Bracq
Henricus Franciscus Bracq (1804–1888) was the 22nd bishop of Ghent, Belgium. Life Bracq was born in Ghent on 26 February 1804. He was ordained to the priesthood on 2 August 1827. From 1830 to 1864 he taught Sacred Scripture at the Major Seminary of Ghent, where he opposed the spread of the opinions of Lamennais. Marc Dessauvage
Marc Dessauvage (1931–1984) was a Belgian ecclesiastical architect, active primarily in the 1960s and 1970s. He broke with traditional church architecture to produce modernist buildings that were thought to give expression to the liturgical reforms of the time. In 1959 he won a Pro Arte Christiana design competition, drawing further praise from the Jesuit art theorist Geert Bekaert and the Benedictine liturgist Frédéric Debuyst, which launched him on a 20-year career. Brothers Of Charity
The Brothers of Charity are an international religious institute of Religious Brothers and associate members at the service of the people most in need in the field of education and health care. The institute was founded in 1807 by Peter Joseph Triest in Ghent, Belgium. He also founded three other religious congregations inspired by Vincentian spirituality. The congregation's patron saint is St. Vincent de Paul. Today the Brothers maintain a presence in 30 countries. History The first work of the Brothers of Charity was caring for elderly men at Byloke. Tony Van Parys
Tony J.M.M. Van Parys (born 21 June 1951) is a Belgian CD&V politician. Van Parys was first chosen to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives in 1985, on a CVP ticket. He was chiefly Minister of Justice in the second Dehaene government (1998-1999). Luc Van den Bossche (born 16 September 1947, in Aalst) is a Belgian socialist politician and father of Freya Van den Bossche. He graduated as a Doctor in law at the University of Ghent in 1970. Alain Platel (born 9 April 1956) is a Belgian choreographer and director. In 1984, he founded les ballets C de la B, which has been called 'one of the world's most influential dance theatre companies'. Platel came to prominence alongside choreographers like Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and Wim Vandekeybus in what became known as the Flemish Wave. Career Early years (1956–1984) Alain Platel was born in Ghent in 1956. In 1969, he was accepted to study at the Hoste-Sabbattini Mime Centre in Ghent. René Jacobs (born 30 October 1946) is a Belgian musician. He came to fame as a countertenor, but later in his career he became known as a conductor of baroque and classical opera. Biography Countertenor Born in Ghent, Jacobs began his musical career as a boy chorister at the Cathedral. Later he studied classical philology at the University of Ghent while continuing to sing in Brussels and in The Hague. The Kuijken brothers, Gustav Leonhardt and Alfred Deller all encouraged him to pursue a career as a countertenor, and he quickly became known as one of the best of his time. He recorded a large amount of less-known Baroque music by such composers as Antonio Cesti, d'India, Ferrari, Marenzio, Lambert, Guédron, William Lawes and others. Bavo Dhooge
Saint Bavo of Ghent (also known as Bavon, Allowin, Bavonius, Baaf; AD 622–659) is a Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox saint. He was the son of Pepin of Landen and the brother of saints Begga and Gertrude of Nivelles. Life Bavo was born near Liège, to a Franks, Frankish noble family that gave him the name Allowin. His father was Pippin of Landen, the Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia, and his mother Itta of Metz. A wild, young aristocrat of Brabant, he contracted a beneficial marriage, and had a daughter. He was a soldier who led an undisciplined and disorderly life. Shortly after the death of his wife, Bavo decided to reform after hearing a sermon preached by Saint Amand on the emptiness of material things.
