Singapore National Olympic Committee
The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) is the National Olympic Committee and National Paralympic Committee for the Republic of Singapore. It was founded in 1947 as the Singapore Olympic and Sports Council (SOSC) before renaming to its current iteration in 1970. The SNOC is responsible for supporting, entering and overseeing Team Singapore for the Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, Winter Olympic Games, Winter Youth Olympic Games, SEA Games, Asian Games, Asian Youth Games and the Commonwealth Games. The SNOC is currently headed by Tan Chuan-Jin, who is also the Speaker of the Parliament. Tan Chuan-Jin
Tan Chuan-Jin (; born 1969) is a Singaporean politician and former brigadier-general who has been serving as Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore since 2017. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Kembangan–Chai Chee division of Marine Parade GRC since 2011. Before entering politics, Tan served in the Singapore Army between 1987 and 2011 and attained the rank Brigadier-General. He made his political debut in the 2011 general election as part of a five-member PAP team contesting in Marine Parade GRC and they won with 56.65% of the vote. Lloyd Valberg
Lloyd Oscar Valberg (14 April 1922 – 26 March 1997) was the first person from Singapore to compete at the Olympics when he went to the 1948 Summer Olympic Games held in London, United Kingdom. Early years He took up the high jump when he was 17, and in 1947 he broke the Singapore record with a jump of 1.87m. Olympic career He qualified for the high jump final at the 1948 Summer Olympics where he finished 14th. Representing Malaya, he finished seventh in the 1950 British Empire Games 120 yards hurdles and eleventh in the high jump. Commonwealth Games Associations
A Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) is a national sports council of the Commonwealth Sports movement. Each association is responsible for organising, supporting and overseeing their national team for both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games. The associations are subject to the rules of, and report to, the Commonwealth Games Federation. As well as promoting sports nationally, an association can also place a Bids for Commonwealth Games, bid for the Commonwealth Games for a potential host city. A National Olympic Committee (NOC) is a national constituent of the worldwide Olympic movement. Subject to the controls of the International Olympic Committee, NOCs are responsible for organizing their people's participation in the Olympic Games. They may nominate cities within their respective areas as candidates for future Olympic Games. Sport In Singapore
Singaporeans participate in a wide variety of sports for recreation as well as for competition. Popular sports include football, swimming, track and field, basketball, rugby union, badminton, table tennis, and cycling. Many public residential areas provide amenities like swimming pools, outdoor spaces (i.e. street football and basketball courts, running tracks) and indoor sport centres, with facilities for badminton, table tennis, squash among others. Singapore At The Commonwealth Games
Singapore has competed in the Commonwealth Games since 1958, and has participated in fifteen of the twenty editions. Singapore first participated as a crown colony in 1958 and 1962, and as a sovereign country within the Commonwealth from 1966 onwards. The country abbreviation is SGP. The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) is the body in Singapore responsible for selecting athletes to represent Singapore at the Commonwealth Games. Singapore At The Olympics
Singapore has sent athletes to most Summer Olympics held since 1948, when it was established as a separate British Crown Colony from the Straits Settlements just over three months before the commencement of the 1948 Summer Olympics. It continued to send a team to the Games until 1964 when Singapore was part of Malaysia, which sent a combined team. Upon Singapore's full independence from Malaysia in 1965, the country continued to participate in all subsequent editions of the Summer Olympics except in 1980 when the country participated in a large Olympic boycott. Singapore made their Winter Olympics debut at the 2018 Winter Olympics, with speed skater, Cheyenne Goh, competing in the short track speed skating event. Edmund William Barker (1 December 1920 – 12 April 2001) was a Singaporean politician and lawyer who authored the Proclamation of Singapore. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he served in the Cabinet between 1964 and 1988. Othman Wok
Othman bin Wok ( Jawi: عثمان بن ووك; b. 8 October 1924 – d. 17 April 2017), often known as Othman Wok, was a Singaporean politician who served as Minister of Social Affairs between 1963 and 1977. After retiring from politics, he was Singapore's Ambassador to Indonesia and served on the boards of the Singapore Tourism Board and Sentosa Development Corporation.
