Simon De Jong
Simon Leendert De Jong (April 29, 1942 – August 18, 2011) was an Indonesian-born Canadians, Canadian parliamentarian. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1979 Canadian federal election, 1979 federal election as a New Democratic Party (Canada), New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament (Canada), Member of Parliament (MP) from Saskatchewan. He would spend five terms and 18 years in the House of Commons. Early life Simon De Jong was born in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, spending the first three years of his life, with his mother Dirkje and older brother Hielke in a concentration camp. Of 3,000 women and children who were incarcerated by the Japanese during the occupation of Java, only a third survived. Simon's father, a Dutch mariner, was also a prisoner-of-war. Ed Broadbent
John Edward "Ed" Broadbent (born March 21, 1936) is a Canadian social-democratic politician, political scientist, and chair of the Broadbent Institute, a policy thinktank. He was leader of the New Democratic Party from 1975 to 1989. In the 2004 federal election, he returned to Parliament for an additional term as the Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre. Early life and career Broadbent was born in Oshawa, Ontario, the son of Percy, who worked at General Motors, and Mary (Welsh) Broadbent, a homemaker. In 1961, he married Yvonne Yamaoka, a Japanese-Canadian town planner whose family had been interned by the federal government in World War II. They divorced in 1967. On September 22, 1988, when Brian Mulroney's government apologized for the internment, Broadbent brought up Yamaoka's experiences during his remarks in the House of Commons. Regina East was a federal electoral district in Saskatchewan, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 1988. This riding was created in 1966 from parts of Humboldt—Melfort, Melville, Moose Jaw—Lake Centre, QuAppelle, Regina City and Yorkton ridings. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Regina—Qu'Appelle and Regina—Wascana ridings. James Balfour (Canadian Politician)
R. James Balfour (22 May 1928 – 12 December 1999) was first elected in the 1972 federal election as a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Regina East, Saskatchewan. He also served in the Senate of Canada from 13 September 1979 until his death. He was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. Robert Keith Rae (born August 2, 1948) is a Canadian diplomat and former politician who is the current Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations since 2020. Lorne Edmund Nystrom, (born April 26, 1946) is a Canadian politician and was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 1993 and again from 1997 to 2004.
