Simon Corbell
Simon Corbell (born 21 November 1970) is a former Australian politician and Deputy Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory. He was also Attorney-General, Minister for Health, Minister for the Environment and Minister for the Capital Metro. Corbell was first elected to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly in 1997 as a member for the electorate of Molonglo in a countback following the resignation of former Chief Minister Rosemary Follett. On 14 August 2015, Simon Corbell announced his decision to retire from politics at the 2016 Australian Capital Territory general election. Early life Corbell grew up in Weston Creek. He attended the local primary and high school before studying at the University of Canberra where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. 2008 Australian Capital Territory General Election
Elections to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly were held on Saturday, 18 October 2008. The incumbent Labor Party, led by Jon Stanhope, was challenged by the Liberal Party, led by Zed Seselja. Candidates were elected to fill three multi-member electorates using a single transferable vote method, known as the Hare-Clark system. The result was another hung parliament with Labor winning seven seats, the Liberals six seats and the Greens finishing with four seats, giving the Greens the balance of power in the 17-member unicameral Assembly. On 31 October 2008, after almost two weeks of deliberations, the Greens chose to support a Labor minority government. Division Of Fraser (Australian Capital Territory)
The Division of Fraser was an Australian Electoral Division in the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory. History The division was created in a redistribution of the former Division of Australian Capital Territory, gazetted on 19 April 1974. It was named for Jim Fraser, who was the Member for Australian Capital Territory from 1951 to 1970. It encompassed the northern suburbs of Canberra, including the districts of Belconnen, Gungahlin, North Canberra and also the Jervis Bay Territory. It also generally included the land in the ACT north of the Molonglo River and Lake Burley Griffin, although at one time it included some suburbs in the inner south and immediately prior to its abolition it had lost Reid and Campbell to the division of Canberra. Bill Stefaniak
William George Stefaniak (born 8 January 1952) is an Australian politician and former Australian Capital Territory Minister. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Australian Capital Territory after succeeding in a leadership challenge against then-leader Brendan Smyth on 16 May 2006. He is a former Major in the Australian Army Reserve and a law graduate of the Australian National University. On 13 December 2007, he was replaced as Liberal Leader by Zed Seselja. Stefaniak contested the 2020 Australian Capital Territory General Election as leader of the Belco Party but was not elected. He was one of the five members for the district of Ginninderra from 1995 to 2008. Brendan Smyth O.Praem (8 June 1927 – 22 August 1997) was a Catholic priest from Belfast, Northern Ireland, who became notorious as a child molester, using his position in the Catholic Church to obtain access to his victims. During a period of over 40 years, Smyth sexually abused and indecently assaulted at least 143 children in parishes in Belfast, Dublin and the United States. His actions were frequently hidden from police and the public by Roman Catholic officials. Controversy surrounding his case contributed to the downfall of the government of Republic of Ireland in December 1994. The Marriage Equality (Same Sex) Act 2013 was an act of parliament of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly that was intended to legalise same-sex marriage in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It was first presented to the ACT Legislative Assembly on 19 September 2013 by the ACT Attorney-General, Simon Corbell. The law intended to build on the existing recognition of same-sex unions in the Australian Capital Territory, which included recognition of de facto partners, civil partnerships and same-sex-only civil unions (with civil unions being replaced by same-sex marriage if the Act was successfully passed).
