Simentera
Simentera were a Capeverdean band or a music group performing traditional and world music and was one of the most famous groups in Cape Verde. History The band was founded in 1992. Two years after the foundation, they appeared at the 1994 Sfinks Festival at Boechout, Belgium. The group performed traditional Capeverdean music with electronic instruments, which the band gave new ways with an acoustic guitar. A local magazine called Simentera the "newest face of the other Capeverdean music". Its group members came from different professions, one of them included Lela Violão. They were one of the few Capevedeans that were strongly associated with their country. Simentera had set the consolidation of the Capeverdean identity. They created a society to support Capeverdean music, their objective was to create a cultural center, a music school for children and CD store where Capeverdean artists go and visit. Coladeira
The ''coladeira'' (; Cape Verdean Creole: ''koladera,'' ) is a music genre from the Cape Verde islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by a variable tempo, a 2-beat bar, and (in its most traditional form) a harmonic structure based in a cycle of fifths. The lyrics structure is organized in strophes that alternate with a refrain. The tone is generally joyful and themes often include social criticism. Instrumentation typically includes a guitar, a '' cavaquinho'', and percussion, among others. According to oral tradition, the genre originated in the 1930s when the composer Anton’ Tchitch’ intentionally speeded up the tempo of a '' morna.'' In the 1950s, it began to incorporate electronic influences, and beginning in the 1980s it was influenced by compas music from Haiti. ''For the Brazilian footballer, see Mário Lúcio da Silva Junior'' Mário Lúcio or Izé (born October 21, 1964) is a Capeverdean singer, composer, writer, politician and a painter. From 2011 to 2016, he was the Capeverdean Minister of Culture. Biography Childhood and teenage years He was born Lúcio Matias de Sousa Mendes in the town of Tarrafal in the island of Santiago's north in the final decade of Portuguese rule, he is a descendant of Jorge and Garda Brito. Mário Lúcio lost his father when he was 12. At age 15, he and his seven siblings lost his mother. He lived in the barrack buildings of the Cape Verdean forces in his hometown under the care of the military. In 1984, he received a scholarship by the Cuban government in Havana where he studied and graduated six years later. He returned to his country where he practiced law. Lela Violão
Lela Violão, born Manuel Tomás da Cruz (January 18, 1929 – April 5, 2009) was a Cape Verdean singer and composer. Lela Violão was born on the island of São Vicente, his father was Tomás Manuel da Cruz and his mother was Isabel Ana Oliveira. Lela started playing the violin at 8 years old, he brought a large generation of musicians and composers which performed festivals and series. He took part with more recent generation and was modeled by his music, kept the register from other ears. He was part of a musical group Simentera. He worked in Roça Água-Izé in São Tomé and Príncipe where as a result of an accident, he lost his middle finger and which he started to play the violin only with his nine fingers. Sfinks Festival
The Sfinks festival is a Belgium, Belgian festival for world music at Boechout. The festival is held during the last weekend in July. History The festival was originally held (1975–1994) in a local school park. In 1982 the festival featured exotic music for the first time which changed its appearance forever. In 1992 and 1994, Friday and Thursday were added to the festival to accommodate the expanding program. In 1994, the venue was changed to a larger site, the 'Molenveld' in Boechout to accommodate the larger crowds. The festival currently receives about 40,000 visitors and over 40 bands each year. Since some years the festival has shrunk again to three days. Funaná
The ''funaná'' is a music and dance genre from Cape Verde. ''Funaná'' is an accordion-based music. The rhythm is usually provided by the '' ferrinho'' much like the use of washboards in zydeco, the saw in Caribbean ripsaw music, the scraper in Sub-Saharan African music and the güiro in Latin and Pre-Columbian music. Characteristics As a music genre, the ''funaná'' is characterized by having a variable tempo, from ''vivace'' to ''andante'', and a 2-beat rhythm. The ''funaná'' is intimately associated to the accordion, more precisely to the diatonic accordion, commonly known as ''gaita'' in Cape Verde. Maria João Monteiro Grancha (born 27 June 1956) is a Portuguese jazz singer. She is known for her vocal flexibility and improvisational skills. Pedro Cardoso (poet)
Pedro Monteiro Cardoso (13 September 1890 – 31 October 1942) was a Cape Verdean writer, poet and folklorist. Biography He was born in 1889 on the island of Fogo. Some sources stated his nationality was a Portuguese Guinean (now Bissau Guinean or Guinea-Bissauan) He was influenced with one of the earliest recorded writers of colonial Cape Verde especially poets including Eugénio Tavares and others including José Lopes da Silva of São Nicolau. He later moved to the colonial (now national) capital Praia where he wrote several books and poems especially of the classical-romantic related themes. In 1933, he published a work related to Cape Verdean folklore titled ''Folclore Caboverdiano'' which included traditional stories and music. Jorge Vera-Cruz Barbosa (25 May 1902 – 6 January 1971) was a Cape Verdean poet and writer. He collaborated in various reviews and Portuguese and Cape Verdean journals. The publication of his poetry anthology ''Arquipélago'' (''Archipelago'') in 1935 marked the beginning of Cape Verdean poetry. He was, along with Baltazar Lopes da Silva and Manuel Lopes, one of the three founders of the literary journal '' Claridade'' ("Clarity") in 1936, which marked the beginning of modern Cape Verdean literature.
