Silvia Sommaggio
Silvia Sommaggio (born 20 November 1969) is a retired Italian long-distance runner who specializes in the 5000 and 10,000 metres as well as cross-country and road running. Biography She was born in Camposampiero. Her father was Gianfranco Sommaggio, the Italian champion in 3000 metres steeplechase in 1961 and 1962. Herself, Sommaggio became Italian 5000 metres champion in 1995 and 10,000 metres champion in 1997 and 2000. She became indoor champion in the 3000 metres in 2000. In the 5000 metres she competed at the 1995 World Championships and the 1996 Olympic Games without reaching the final, and won the silver medal at the 1995 Summer Universiade in Fukuoka. In the 10,000 metres she competed at the 1996 Olympic Games without reaching the final, before winning the silver medal at the 1997 Mediterranean Games. Marathon
The marathon is a long-distance foot race with a distance of , usually run as a road race, but the distance can be covered on trail routes. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions. 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships
The 1st IAAF World Road Running Championships were held in Debrecen, Hungary on 8 October 2006, the women's race starting at 11:00 and the men's race at 13:00. This was the first time the title of World Road Running Champion had been competed for, with this competition replacing the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in the international sporting calendar. 140 athletes from 39 nations took part in the two races. As well as individual honours, there is also a team event where the times of the first three runners home from each country are added together to produce the team standings. Only nations with at least three competitors entered in the race are eligible for this competition.
