Silliman National Writers Workshop
The Silliman University National Writers Workshop (SUNWW) is an annual creative writing workshop that was established in 1962 by the late Edilberto K. Tiempo and National Artist for Literature Edith L. Tiempo of Silliman University. The SUNWW is the longest-running creative writing workshop in Asia. It is commonly regarded as the most prestigious one in the entire region, having been able to produce many of the most influential and renowned names in Philippine literature. Practically all Filipino writers of any importance have joined the Silliman Writers Workshop at one time or another, either as fellows, lecturers, or panelists. Silliman University
Silliman University (also referred to as Silliman or SU) is a private university, private Research institute, research university in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, the Philippines. Established in 1901 as Silliman Institute by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, it is the first United States, American and Protestantism, Protestant founded institution of Higher education, higher learning in the Philippines and in Asia. The university was named after Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, a former businessman and philanthropist from Downtown Cohoes Historic District, Cohoes, New York who provided the initial sum of $10,000 for the establishment of the school. Starting as an elementary school for boys, the school expanded to become a college in 1910, acquiring university status in 1938. Cirilo Bautista
Cirilo F. Bautista (July 9, 1941 – May 6, 2018) was a Filipino poet, critic and writer of nonfiction. A National Artist of the Philippines award was conferred on him in 2014. Early life and education Bautista was born in Manila on July 9, 1941, and spent his childhood in Balic-Balic, Sampaloc. He received his basic education from Legarda Elementary School (1st Honorable Mention, 1954) and Victorino Mapa High School (Valedictorian, 1959). He received his degrees in AB Literature from the University of Santo Tomas (''magna cum laude'', 1963), MA Literature from St. Louis University, Baguio (''magna cum laude'', 1968), and Doctor of Arts in Language and Literature from De La Salle University-Manila (1990). The Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, popularly known as the Palanca Awards, are a set of literary awards for Philippine writers. Usually referred to as the "Pulitzer Prize of the Philippines", it is the country's highest literary honor in terms of prestige. Winning works are entered in the competition either as previously published pieces or in manuscript form. The Palanca Awards, organized by the Carlos Palanca Foundation, is one of the Philippines' longest-running awards programs. Dumaguete, officially the City of Dumaguete ( ceb, Dakbayan sa Dumaguete; fil, Lungsod ng Dumaguete), is a 3rd income class component city and the capital of the province of Negros Oriental, Philippines. Philippine Literature
Philippine literature is literature associated with the Philippines from prehistory, through its colonial legacies, and on to the present. Pre-Hispanic Philippine literature was actually epics passed on from generation to generation, originally through an oral tradition. However, wealthy families, especially in Mindanao, were able to keep transcribed copies of these epics as family heirloom. One such was the ''Darangen'', an epic of the Maranaos. Classical literature in Spanish during the 19th Century On December 1, 1846, the first daily newspaper, '' La Esperanza'', was published in the country.
