Silence (1926 Film)
''Silence'' is a 1926 American silent crime drama film directed by Rupert Julian and starring Vera Reynolds, H.B. Warner, and Raymond Hatton. Reynolds plays a dual role of a mother and, at a later date, her daughter. Long thought lost, a print was rediscovered in 2016. The film's sets were designed by the art director Max Parker. Rupert Julian
Rupert Julian (born Thomas Percival Hayes; 25 January 1879 – 27 December 1943) was a New Zealand cinema actor, director, writer and producer. During his career, Julian directed 60 films and acted in over 90 films. He is best remembered for directing Lon Chaney, Sr., Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera (1925 film), ''The Phantom of the Opera'' (1925). He also directed ''The Cat Creeps (1930 film), The Cat Creeps'' (1930), a sound remake of ''The Cat and the Canary (1927 film), The Cat and the Canary'' (1927), which is now considered a lost film, with only two minutes of footage remaining in the 1932 Universal comedy short film ''Boo! The Cinémathèque Française (), founded in 1936, is a French non-profit film organization that holds one of the largest archives of film documents and film-related objects in the world. Based in Paris's 12th arrondissement, the archive offers daily screenings of worldwide films. History The collection emerged from the efforts of Henri Langlois and Lotte H. Eisner in the mid 1930s to collect and screen films. Langlois had acquired one of the largest collections in the world by the beginning of World War II, only to have it nearly wiped out by the German authorities in occupied France, who ordered the destruction of all films made prior to 1937. He and his friends smuggled huge numbers of documents and films out of occupied France to protect them until the end of the war. After the war, the French government provided a small screening room, staff and subsidy for the collection, which was relocated to the Avenue de Messine.
