Siiri Rantanen
Siiri Johanna "Äitee" Rantanen ( Lintunen, born 14 December 1924) is a Finnish retired cross-country skier. She competed in the 1952, 1956 and 1960 Olympics and won a medal in each of them: a gold and a bronze in the 3 × 5 km relay in 1956–60 and another bronze in the individual 10 km in 1952; she placed fifth and 15th over 10 km in 1956 and 1960, respectively. She also won five medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Domestically Rantanen won six individual (10 km in 1954 and 1957–58; 5 km in 1960–1962) and five relay titles (1952, 1958–1961). Rantanen also won three Finnish titles in athletics: one individual in cross-country running in 1960 and two in 1961, in the 3 × 800 m relay and team cross-country; the same year she also became the Finnish champion in the 50 km cycling road race. Tohmajärvi () is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Neighbouring municipalities are Joensuu, Kitee and Rääkkylä. The municipality of Värtsilä was consolidated with Tohmajärvi in 2005. Sortavala, a town in the Karelia, Russia, is located south of Tohmajärvi. Tohmajärvi is located along the Blue Highway, which is an international tourist route from Mo i Rana, Norway to Pudozh, Russia via Sweden. The border crossing to Russia, Niirala, is in Värtsilä, now part of Tohmajärvi. One of the most significant highways in Tohmajärvi is Highway 9, which runs west through Joensuu, Kuopio, Jyväskylä and Tampere to Turku. The Blue Highway follows this highway to Tohmajärvi. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1962 took place February 18–25, 1962 in Zakopane, Poland. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1958 took place 2-9 March 1958 in Lahti, Finland. This marked the third time the city hosted this event having done so in 1926 and 1938. Germany returned to the FIS Nordic Ski Championships for the first time officially since 1939, albeit as East Germany and West Germany. Additionally, it was the first championships to electronic timekeeping where results were timed to the tenth of a second rather than the full second. The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1954 took place 13-21 February 1954 in Falun, Sweden. These were the first races where women competed with events in the 10 km and 3 × 5 km relay. It also saw the 18 km reduced to 15 km in men's cross-country along with the return of the 30 km which was last held in 1926. The Nordic combined saw the ski jump held first with the cross-country distance reduced to 15 km as well. The Soviet Union also debuted in these championships as well. The 10 kilometre cross-country skiing event was part of the cross-country skiing programme at the 1960 Winter Olympics, in Squaw Valley, California, United States. It was the third appearance of the event. The competition was held on Saturday, February 20, 1960, at the McKinney Creek Stadium. It was a Soviet Union clean sweep of the medals with Maria Gusakova winning gold and defending champion Lyubov Kozyreva taking silver. In fact the Soviets also took fourth place through Alevtina Kolchina. Two days later, Gusakova's husband, Nikolay Gusakov won bronze in the Nordic Combined.
