Signa
Signa () is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Florence in the Italian region Tuscany, located about west of Florence. Signa borders the following municipalities: Campi Bisenzio, Carmignano, Lastra a Signa, Poggio a Caiano, Scandicci. History The origins of Signa are uncertain. Most likely it already existed in ancient times, although it is not known if it was founded by the Etruscans or by Romans. It is also scarcely mentioned in the Low Middle Ages: Charlemagne donated to one of his captains a "Castle of Signa", although this is disputed. Giovanna Da Signa
Blessed Giovanna da Signa (1245 – 9 November 1307) was an Italian Roman Catholic from Florence and a recluse with a reputation for being a miracle worker. Her life was spent in silent solitude dedicated to God and she remained a virgin her life as part of her consecration to God. Her beatification was celebrated in Florence under Pope Pius VI in 1798 and was the last beatification of this pope's reign. Life Giovanna was born in Signa in a castle along the Arno River in Florence. In 1268 she became a recluse in a small cave in Signa and decided to consecrate her life – and indeed her entire period of solitude – to God while deciding to remain chaste in further service to him. She garnered a formidable reputation for working miracles in her life though at least six have been recorded during her life. Boncompagno Da Signa
Boncompagno da Signa (also ''Boncompagnus'' or ''Boncompagni''; c. 1165/1175 – after 1240) was an Italian scholar, grammarian, historian, and philosopher. Born in Signa, near Florence, between 1165 and 1175, he was a professor of rhetoric (''ars dictaminis'') at the University of Bologna and then the University of Padua. In the early thirteenth century, he was one of the first Western European authors to write in the vernacular, in his case Italian. He spent his career travelling between Ancona, Venice, and Bologna and died at Florence. He wrote a history of the 1173 Siege of Ancona, his only work of that kind, and works on chess. His love of elaborate practical jokes is described by Helen Waddell in ''The Wandering Scholars'' (1927). The events of the 1173 Siege of Ancona were narrated in 1204 in da Signa's ‘’Liber de Obsidione Anconae’’. Ouida
Ouida (; 1 January 1839 – 25 January 1908) was the pseudonym of the English novelist Maria Louise Ramé (although she preferred to be known as Marie Louise de la Ramée). During her career, Ouida wrote more than 40 novels, as well as short stories, children's books and essays. Moderately successful, she lived a life of luxury, entertaining many of the literary figures of the day. '' Under Two Flags'', one of her most famous novels, described the British in Algeria. It expressed sympathy for the French colonists—with whom Ouida deeply identified—and, to some extent, the Arabs. The novel was adapted for the stage, and was filmed six times. Her novel '' A Dog of Flanders'' is considered a children's classic in much of Asia. The American author Jack London cited her novel ''Signa'' as one of the reasons for his literary success. Biography He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence under Domenico Trentacoste. He was a prolific designer of medals. Tommaso Bisagno (5 April 1935 – 18 January 2014) was an Italian academic and politician. Biography Bisagno was born in Signa in 1935. Graduated in chemistry, he was a university professor by profession. He enrolled in Christian Democracy in 1956. He was a municipal councilor in Signa and a regional councilor in Tuscany. He was elected deputy, for the first time, in 1979 and was re-elected for three other legislatures, keeping the seat in the Chamber until 1994. He served as undersecretary for defence in the first and second government of Bettino Craxi, in the sixth government of Amintore Fanfani and as undersecretary for public works in the first government of Giuliano Amato. Elected Mayor of Signa (1990-1995), he was the first Christian Democrat to hold that position.
