Sidney Hickox
Sidney Hickox, A.S.C. (July 15, 1895 – May 16, 1982) was an American film and television cinematographer. Career New York City-born Hickox started his film career at the age of 20 as an assistant cameraman at Manhattan's Biograph Studios and quickly became a full-time director of photography with ''Gloria's Romance'' in 1916. Following World War I, where he was a photographer for the US Naval Air Service, he relocated to Hollywood and joined the staff of First National Pictures. When the studio was absorbed by Warner Bros. in 1928, he remained there and worked on hundreds of projects until his retirement from feature films. Hickox also directed multiple episodes of the TV series ''I Love Lucy'' and ''The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour'' during their final seasons, as well as most of the episodes of ''The Andy Griffith Show'' during its lengthy run. Plot Rory O'More leaves his sweetheart Kathleen O'Connor back in the old country while he travels to America to establish himself. He is a musician, and hopes to make it big. Kathleen grows tired of waiting and travels to America, only to find him on stage performing "their" song and kissing another woman. Synthetic Sin is a 1929 American comedy film directed by William A. Seiter, based on a play of the same name. While filmed as a silent, it was released by Warner Bros. accompanied with a Vitaphone music soundtrack and sound effects. However most of the Vitaphone discs are still lost, apart from the final reel. Plot Famed playwright Donald Anthony returns home to Magnolia Gap, Virginia, and proposes to Betty Fairfax. She accepts and he offers her the lead part in his next play, but the play is a disaster. Donald tells her that she is unsuited for the role, that it requires someone with more life experience. Rather than return home defeated, Betty stays in New York, in a bad neighborhood where local gangsters adopt her as their own. When Donald comes to visit her, they eject him. ''Happiness Ahead'' is a lost 1928 silent film drama directed by William A. Seiter and starring Colleen Moore and then husband and wife Edmund Lowe and Lilyan Tashman. It was produced by First National before it acquired by Warner Brothers. Moore was married to the producer John McCormick who frequently produced her films and they held rights to their films. Moore donated copies of her films to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and over the years the archive allowed the films to decay including ''Happiness Ahead''. This film is now lost save for footage from its trailer. The trailer was preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2009. ''The Private Life of Helen of Troy'' is a 1927 American silent film about Helen of Troy based on the 1925 novel of the same name by John Erskine, and adapted to screen by Gerald Duffy. The film was directed by Alexander Korda and starred María Corda as Helen, Lewis Stone as Menelaus, and Ricardo Cortez as Paris. Coming at the end of the silent film era, it was nominated for an Academy Award in 1929, the year of the Awards' inception, in the category of Best Title Writing. Duffy died on June 25, 1928, and was the first person to be posthumously nominated for an Academy Award.
