Sibu (; Foochow Romanized, Hokchew Romanized: ''Sĭ-bŭ'') is a landlocked city in the central region of Sarawak. It is the capital of Sibu District in Sibu Division, Sarawak, Malaysia. The city is located on the island of Borneo and covers an area of . It is located at the confluence of the Rajang River, Rajang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometres from the South China Sea and approximately north-east of the state capital Kuching. Sibu is mainly populated by people of Chinese descent, mainly from Fuzhou. Other ethnic groups such as Iban people, Iban, Malays (ethnic group), Malay and Melanau people, Melanau are also present, but unlike other regions of Sarawak, they are not as significant. The cities population as of 2010 is 162,676. Sibu was founded by James Brooke in 1862 when he built a fort in the town to fend off attacks by the indigenous Dayak people. Sibu District is an administrative district in Sibu Division, Sarawak, Malaysia covering a total area of 2229.8 km2. It can be divided into Sibu, Sibu Town area (129.5 km2) and the rural areas (2,100.3 km2). The satellite township of Sibu Jaya (26 km away from the Sibu city) is included in the rural areas. Sibu District is under the purview of Sibu District Office located at Sibu Islamic Complex, Sibu City. There are currently two local authorities namely Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) and Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) that administers Sibu City and Sibu rural areas respectively. The Sibu Municipal Council (Malay: ''Majlis Perbandaran Sibu'', abbreviated SMC or MPS) is the municipal council which administers the district of Sibu in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. Sibu Division is one of the twelve administrative divisions of Sarawak, Malaysia. It has a total area of 8,278.3 square kilometres, and is the third largest division after Kapit Division and Miri Division. The population of Sibu Division (year 2000 census) was 257,300. Ethnically, the population was mostly Iban, Chinese, Malay, and Melanau. Sibu Division consists of three districts: Sibu, Kanowit, and Selangau. Wong Nai Siong
Wong Nai Siong (; Bàng-uâ-cê: Uòng Nāi-siòng) (1849—1924) as a Chinese revolutionary leader and educator from Minqing county in Fuzhou, Fujian province, China. He served in The Methodist Episcopal Church for many years and participated in the "Ten Thousand Word Memorial" or the "Memorial of the Examination Candidates" Petition (Gongche Shangshu movement) in 1895. He also took part in the Hundred Days' Reform in 1898 and the 1911 Xinhai Revolution which resulted in the founding of the Republic of China. Tua Pek Kong Temple, Sibu
Tua Pek Kong Temple () (also called Sibu Eng Ann Teng Tua Pek Kong) in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia is the oldest Chinese temple in the town with a 7-storey pagoda with the temple history dates back to 1850s. History The temple history dates back to early 1850s, and later being mentioned in the Kingdom of Sarawak Government's Report of "''Sarawak Gazette''" in 1871. In 1897, the temple was rebuilt into a typical Chinese Taoist temple architecture designed with tiled roof, stone block floor and all the decorative purlin and fixtures which were imported from China; the statue of Tua Pek Kong deity was specially sculptured and imported from Xiamen.
