Siassie Kenneally
Siassie Kenneally (29 May 1969 – 2018) was an Inuit, Inuk artist based in Cape Dorset (Kinngait), Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). Kenneally was known for her pencil-crayon drawings depicting traditional Inuit lifestyles. Her work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and the Dennos Museum Center, Dennos Museum. In 2017, her work had a solo exhibition at Feheley Fine Arts titled "All the Things That I Have Seen". Biography Kenneally comes from a family of artists, her mother Mayureak Ashoona was a celebrated print maker and her father, Qaqaq Ashoona, noted carver. She was the granddaughter of artists Sheouak Petaulassie and Pitseolak Ashoona, and cousins to Shuvinai Ashoona and Annie Pootoogook. She began to draw 2004 while in the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, Kinngait Co-operative. West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative
The West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative, also known as the Kinngait Co-operative is an Inuit co-operative in Kinngait, Nunavut best known for its activities in buying, producing and selling Inuit artworks. The co-operative is part of Arctic Co-operatives Limited, a group of locally owned businesses that provide fundamental services in the Canadian north. The co-operative sets prices for the sale of its member's works, pays the artists in advance and shares its profits with its members. The co-operative was established in 1959 by James Houston and Kananginak Pootoogook as an effort to encourage art making as an income stream for local residents. Since 1959 it has purchased over 100,000 artworks from local artists and overseen the production of an annual edition of 50 prints by Kinngait artists. Cape Dorset
Kinngait (Inuktitut meaning "high mountain" or "where the hills are"; Syllabics: ᑭᙵᐃᑦ), formerly known as Cape Dorset until 27 February 2020, is an Inuit hamlet located on Dorset Island near Foxe Peninsula at the southern tip of Baffin Island in the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. History Kinngait, previously Cape Dorset and Sikusiilaq before that is where the remains of the Thule (Early Inuit) and pre-Inuit Dorset people (Tuniit) were discovered, who lived between 1000 BC and 1100 AD. The European name of Cape Dorset was given by Captain Luke Foxe after Edward Sackville, 4th Earl of Dorset, on 24 September 1631. The Inuit originally called the inlet ''Sikusiilaq'', after the area of sea ocean nearby that remains ice-free all winter. Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post here in 1913, where they traded furs and skins for supplies such as tobacco, ammunition, flour, gas, tea and sugar.
