Shuttleworth, Greater Manchester
Shuttleworth is a hamlet at the northeastern extremity of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the South Pennines, north of Bury and south of Edenfield; Scout Moor Wind Farm lies to the immediate east. Effectively a suburb of Ramsbottom, the M66 motorway divides Shuttleworth from the main core of that town. Historically a part of Lancashire, the name Shuttleworth derives from the Old English ''scyttels'' and ''worth'' meaning a gated enclosure. The first element refers to a bar. It was documented as Suttelsworth in 1227 and Shuttelesworthe in 1296. During the Middle Ages, Shuttleworth lay within the township of Walmersley (sometimes called Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth), parish of Bury, and hundred of Salford. Following the Local Government Act 1894, the area became a civil parish, but in 1933 was dissolved and amalgamated into the Ramsbottom Urban District. The Shuttleworth Collection is a working aeronautical and automotive collection located at the Old Warden Aerodrome, Old Warden in Bedfordshire, England. It is the oldest in the world and one of the most prestigious, due to the variety of old and well-preserved aircraft. History The collection was founded in 1928 by aviator Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth. While flying a Fairey Battle at night on 2 August 1940, Shuttleworth fatally crashed. His mother, in 1944, formed the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust "for the teaching of the science and practice of aviation and of afforestation and agriculture." Collection Restoration and maintenance work is carried out by a staff of 12 full-time and many volunteer engineers. The college is part of Bedford College, and mainly offers courses and training related to agriculture and the natural environment. History Shuttleworth College was founded in 1944 as part of the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust. Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth, the owner of the Old Warden Estate in Bedfordshire, England was killed in 1940 while serving with the Royal Air Force. He had a keen interest in farming and estate management; after his death, his mother Dorothy Clotilda Shuttleworth established a trust in his memory. It has been called one of the oldest legal firms in the western United States and in 2012 was considered one of the largest law firms in Iowa. History The company has its roots in the 1854 law firm of Nathaniel M. Hubbard whose early partners included Frank Dawley (1865-1922), Charles Wheeler (1851-1927) and Justice John M.
