Shuttleworth, Greater Manchester
Shuttleworth is a hamlet at the northeastern extremity of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the South Pennines, north of Bury and south of Edenfield; Scout Moor Wind Farm lies to the immediate east. Effectively a suburb of Ramsbottom, the M66 motorway divides Shuttleworth from the main core of that town. Historically a part of Lancashire, the name Shuttleworth derives from the Old English ''scyttels'' and ''worth'' meaning a gated enclosure. The first element refers to a bar. It was documented as Suttelsworth in 1227 and Shuttelesworthe in 1296. From the Middle Ages, Shuttleworth lay within the township of Walmersley (sometimes called Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth) in the ancient parish of Bury, and hundred of Salford. Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth was made a civil parish in 1866. The Shuttleworth Collection is a working aviation, automotive and agricultural collection located at Old Warden Aerodrome in Bedfordshire, England. History The collection was founded in 1928 by aviator Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth. While flying a Fairey Battle at night on 2 August 1940, Shuttleworth fatally crashed. His mother, in 1944, formed the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust "for the teaching of the science and practice of aviation and of afforestation and agriculture." Collection Restoration and maintenance work is carried out by a staff of 12 full-time and many volunteer engineers. These volunteers are all members of the 3,000-strong Shuttleworth Veteran Aeroplane Society (SVAS). These dedicated enthusiasts are crucial to the preservation and restoration of the collection. Shuttleworth College is a further education college in the village of Old Warden in Bedfordshire, England. The college is part of Bedford College, and mainly offers courses and training related to agriculture and the natural environment. History Shuttleworth College was founded in 1944 as part of the Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth Remembrance Trust. Richard Ormonde Shuttleworth, the owner of the Old Warden Estate in Bedfordshire, England was killed in 1940 while serving with the Royal Air Force. He had a keen interest in farming and estate management; after his death, his mother Dorothy Clotilda Shuttleworth established a trust in his memory. Shuttleworth College, formerly Gawthorpe High School, is a mixed 11–16 foundation secondary school located in Padiham, Lancashire, England. History The school opened in September 2006 as part of an ambitious plan to replace all of the district's 11-18 education facilities, funded by a government PFI programme called Building Schools for the Future. ''The Shuttleworths'' is a British radio comedy that aired as five series between 1993 and 2010, with a sixth in 2022, and numerous specials on BBC Radio 4. It features singer/songwriter from Sheffield, John Shuttleworth, his family, and his neighbours, and is written and performed by comedian Graham Fellows. Format The show revolves around John Shuttleworth and his family. Each episode is fifteen minutes long and is narrated by John Shuttleworth himself. The episodes are recorded on a cassette tape by John, featuring John's commentary addressed directly to the listener and eavesdropping on his own daily life. Shuttleworth & Ingersoll P.L.C. is a law firm located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It has been called one of the oldest legal firms in the western United States and in 2012 was considered one of the largest law firms in Iowa. History The company has its roots in the 1854 law firm of Nathaniel M. Hubbard whose early partners included Frank Dawley (1865-1922), Charles Wheeler (1851-1927) and Justice John M. Grimm (1866-1943). Owen N. Elliot (1886-1982) was a member of the firm from 1911 until his retirement in 1958. The firm was called Grimm, Wheeler & Elliot beginning in 1911 and later became Grimm, Wheeler, Elliott and Shuttleworth. T.M. (Ty) Ingersoll (1902-1972) and V.
