Shostak ''(Polish.Szóstak)'' is a noble surname of Polish—Lithuanian origin, which appeared at the turn of the XV -XVI century. The surname has become widespread among Polish, Lithuanian, Estonian, Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Jewish ethnic groups, due to the emigration of its ancestors caused by the Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Origin The Shostaks come from an ancient Polish family of officials, mainly managing the mints of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The origin of the surname is the name of the silver coin "shostak", minted in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth since 1528 at the mints of Krakow and Torun. Seth Shostak (born July 20, 1943) is an American astronomer and author, and is currently the senior astronomer for the SETI Institute. Shostak hosts SETI's weekly radio show/podcast ''Big Picture Science'', has played himself numerous times in TV and internet film dramas, and has acted in several science fiction films. Early life and education Seth Shostak was born in a Jewish family in Arlington, Virginia, the son of Arthur and Bertha Shostak (née Gortenburg); his father was an electrical engineer. He earned his BS in physics from Princeton University and a PhD in astrophysics from the California Institute of Technology. Professional work Shostak used radio telescopes in the US and the Netherlands, searching for clues to the ultimate fate of the universe by analyzing galaxy motion. Robert Shostak
Robert Eliot Shostak (born July 26, 1948, in Arlington, Virginia) is an American computer scientist and Silicon Valley entrepreneur. He is most noted academically for his seminal work in the branch of distributed computing known as Byzantine Fault Tolerance. He is also known for co-authoring the Paradox Database, and most recently, the founding of Vocera Communications, a company that makes wearable, ''Star Trek''-like communication badges. Shostak has authored more than forty academic papers and patents, and was editor of the 7th Conference on Automated Deduction. He has Erdős number 2 through his collaboration with Kenneth Kunen. Marjorie Shostak
Marjorie Shostak (May 11, 1945 – October 6, 1996) was an American anthropologist. Though she never received a formal degree in anthropology, she conducted extensive fieldwork among the !Kung San people of the Kalahari desert in south-western Africa and was widely known for her descriptions of the lives of women in this hunter-gatherer society. Life Shostak was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She received her B.A. in literature from Brooklyn College, where she was a supporter of the women's equal rights movement, and met her future husband, Melvin Konner. From 1969 to 1971, Shostak and Konner lived among the !Kung San in the Dobe region of southwest Africa, on the border between Botswana and South Africa. There they learned the !Kung language and conducted anthropological fieldwork. Dean Shostak is an American crystallophone-player and violinist. He regularly performs his Crystal Concerts which consist of music played on his glass instruments, such as the glass violin, the glass armonica, and the crystal handbells. Personal life Shostak began performing at age 14 in Colonial Williamsburg in the Music Teacher's Shop. He earned a B.A. in Music from the University of Virginia and learned to play the pocket or kit violin and the hurdy-gurdy. In 1991 he became involved in the revival of the glass armonica. Eliezer Shostak (, born 16 December 1911, died 20 August 2001) was an Israeli politician who served as Minister of Health from 1977 until 1984 and as a member of the Knesset from 1951 until 1988. Hanna Shostak ( uk, Соба́чко-Шоста́к Га́нна; ; 1883–1965) was a folk painter of Ukraine. She was a member of the USSR Union of Artists and Master of Folk Art of the UkSSR (). Life She was born in 1883 in Skoptsi, Poltava Governorate and she had a rudimentary education. Her interest in skill in art was largely self-taught. She came under the influence of mentors that included Aleksandra Ekster. With their guidance her folk art designs were used for carpets. The carpets won awards.
