Shostak ''(Polish.Szóstak)'' is a noble surname of Polish—Lithuanian origin, which appeared at the turn of the XV -XVI century.
The surname has become widespread among Polish, Lithuanian, Estonian, Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Jewish ethnic groups, due to the emigration of its ancestors caused by the Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Origin
The Shostaks come from an ancient Polish family of officials, mainly managing the mints of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The origin of the surname is the name of the silver coin "shostak", minted in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth since 1528 at the mints of Krakow and Torun.
