Shortcut To Somewhere
Shortcut to Somewhere was the second single released from Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks's 1986 album ''Soundtracks''. The A-side, which had been part of the soundtrack for the film ''Quicksilver'', featured Fish on vocals, his only commercial recording outside Marillion before his departure from the band in late 1988. Fish also wrote the lyrics for the title track, a fast, keyboard-based pop song similar to the Genesis material of this period, with a typical 1980s production. A section of the song was performed live by Genesis as part of a solo career medley on the 1988 Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert. It is the only Tony Banks solo song to have been played live by the band. Tony Banks (musician)
Anthony George Banks (born 27 March 1950) is an English musician, songwriter and film composer primarily known as the keyboardist and founding member of the rock band Genesis. Banks is also a prolific solo artist, releasing six solo albums that range through progressive rock, pop, and classical music. Banks co-founded Genesis in 1967 while studying at Charterhouse. He was their keyboardist and one of their principal songwriters and lyricists. He became a frequent user of the Hammond T-102 organ, Mellotron, ARP Pro Soloist and Yamaha CP-70 piano. In the band's earliest years Banks would play acoustic guitar for some of the mellow and pastoral songs. In 2010, Banks was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis. In 2011, he was included on MusicRadar's list of the 27 greatest keyboard players of all time. In 2015, he was named "Prog God" at the Progressive Music Awards. ''Quicksilver'' is a 1986 American drama film written and directed by Thomas Michael Donnelly and starring Kevin Bacon. ''Kettle of Fish (88-98)'' is the title of a compilation album by Fish released in 1998, providing a retrospective on his solo career plus two new songs. Unlike the previous best-of ''Yin and Yang'' (1995), this is a single disc and does not include any Marillion material. ''Kettle of Fish'' was Fish's first release under a new contract with Roadrunner Records, who signed Fish after the financially catastrophic ''Sunsets on Empire'' album and tour of 1997 had forced him to dissolve his own label Dick Brothers Record Company. (The Dick Bros. logo still appears on the back, but this appears to be strictly symbolic.) On May 14, 1988, the Atlantic Records label held its 40th Anniversary Celebration by staging a non-stop concert lasting almost 13 hours starting at noon and ending just shortly before 1am the following morning at Madison Square Garden, New York. The event was dubbed "It's Only Rock And Roll". Only artists who had released material on the Atlantic label in the United States performed, spanning the company's forty-year existence.
