Shirley McKechnie
Shirley Elizabeth McKechnie (18 June 1926 – 5 September 2022) was an Australian pioneer of contemporary dance as a dancer, choreographer, director and educator. Early life and education Born Shirley Elizabeth Gorham was born on 18 June 1926 in Melbourne, McKechnie was educated at Albion State School, followed by Williamstown High School. She took dance lessons from the age of four and began ballet at ten. On finishing school, she worked at the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works, but continued her dance training in the Bodenweiser technique. Career McKechnie opened her first dance school in 1945. In 1948 she married Ken McKechnie and had two children before establishing another dance school in 1955. In 1963 she founded the Australian Contemporary Dance Theatre and served as its artistic director until 1973. The Australian Dance Awards recognise excellence and promote dance in Australia. They are awarded under the auspices of the Australian Dance Council (Ausdance) for performance, choreography, design, dance writing, teaching and related professions. Gertrud Bodenwieser
Gertrud Bodenwieser (3 February 1890 – 10 November 1959), also known as "Gertrude", was a dancer, choreographer, dance teacher and pioneer of expressive dance. Early life The daughter of Theodore and Maria Bondi, a wealthy Jewish couple, she turned to dance under the pseudonym Gertrud Bodenwieser of which she was celebrated in Vienna as a sensation. Bodenwieser's style was based on classical ballet of which she was originally taught by Carl Godlewski from 1905 to 1910; she had a new style of dance that was welcomed by the audience, critics and young students with much enthusiasm. She was inspired by the works of Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis. One of her greatest successes was "Demon Machine", a dance performance, in which a group of dancers turned into machines.
