Shirley Johnson
Shirley Johnson (December 14, 1937 – January 14, 2021) was a Michigan legislator. Early life Johnson was born on December 14, 1937. Education Johnson attended Oakland Community College and Wayne State University, and graduated from Michigan State University. Career On November 4, 1980, Johnson was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives where she represented the 68th district from January 14, 1981, to 1992. On November 3, 1992, Johnson was again elected to the Michigan House of Representatives where she represented the 41st district from January 13, 1993, to 1998. On March 16, 1999, Johnson was elected to the Michigan Senate in a special election after the resignation of Mike Bouchard. In the state senate, she represented the 13th district and served from March 23, 1999, to 2006. Michigan's 13th Senate District
Michigan's 13th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 13th district was created by the 1850 Michigan Constitution, as the 1835 constitution only permitted a maximum of eight senate districts. It has been represented by Democrat Rosemary Bayer since 2023, following her victory over Republican Jason Rhines. Geography District 13 encompasses parts of Oakland and Wayne counties. 2011 Apportionment Plan District 13, as dictated by the 2011 Apportionment Plan, covered eastern Oakland County in the northern suburbs of Detroit, including Troy, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Berkley, Clawson, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, and Rochester. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats.
