The Shire of Deakin was a local government area in the Goulburn Valley region, about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1893 until 1994. History Deakin was once part of the vast Echuca Road District, which was formed in 1864 and redesignated as Echuca Shire in 1871. (Echuca Shire should not be confused with the separate local government area of Echuca Borough, which was also established in 1864, and proclaimed a city in 1965. This borough covered only the Echuca urban area and the rural area immediately surrounding it.) The Goulburn Valley is a sub-region, part of the Hume region of the Australian state of Victoria. The sub-region consists of those areas in the catchment of the Goulburn River and other nearby streams, and is part of the Murray-Darling Basin. The Goulburn Valley is bordered on the south by the Great Dividing Range and to the north by the Murray River, the state border with New South Wales. The sub-region is one of Australia's most productive and intensively farmed areas and is predominantly irrigated. The Ovens River, a perennial river of the north-east Murray catchment, part of the Murray-Darling basin, is located in the alpine and Hume regions of the Australian state of Victoria. Girgarre, Victoria
Girgarre ( ) is a small town in the Goulburn Valley, Victoria, Australia. It is in the Shire of Campaspe local government area. At the , Girgarre and surrounding area had a population of 561. History The Post Office opened on 21 May 1917 as Stanhope North, and was renamed Girgarre in 1920. A railway branch line from Rushworth opened in 1917. The line was closed back to Stanhope in 1975, and the branch was closed completely in 1987. There is now a short rail trail from Girgarre towards Stanhope, and a facsimile station and rail track at Girgarre. Girgarre Kindergarten was established in 1964. It has operated out of several locations within the town. Currently the kindergarten operates out of the old Primary School Principal's home. The Kindergarten is celebrating its 50-year anniversary in 2014 with several events planned throughout the year. The Shire of Campaspe is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the northern part of the state. It covers an area of and in June 2018 had a population of 37,592. It includes the towns of Girgarre, Echuca, Kyabram, Rochester, Tongala and Rushworth. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the City of Echuca, Shire of Deakin, Shire of Rochester, Shire of Waranga, Town of Kyabram and part of the Shire of Rodney. The Town of Kyabram was a local government area in the Goulburn Valley region, west of Shepparton and about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The town covered an area of , and existed from 1954 until 1994. History The town was originally on the western edge of the Shire of Rodney, but on 1 April 1954, it was severed and became a borough.
