Sherry Farrell Racette
Sherry Farrell Racette (born 1952) is a First Nations feminist scholar, author, curator, and artist. She is best known for her contributions to Indigenous and Canadian art histories. She is currently an associate professor of Visual Arts at the University of Regina. Life Racette was born in Manitoba, and is of Métis ancestry. She is of a member of the Timiskaming First Nation and taught at Concordia University in 2007. She holds a master's degree in Education, from the University of Regina, and completed her PhD in Native Studies, Anthropology, and History at the University of Manitoba. Works Academic career Racette is a board member of the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, and her artwork promotes Aboriginal and Aboriginal women's histories. Racette's paintings have been featured in a number of publications, and her work "''The Flower Beadwork People''" was published by the Gabriel Dumont Institute in 1992. Timiskaming First Nation
Timiskaming (former official designation Timiskaming 19) is a First Nations reserve in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region of Quebec, Canada, just north of the head of Lake Timiskaming. It belongs to the Timiskaming First Nation, an Algonquin band. It is geographically within the Témiscamingue Regional County Municipality but administratively not part of it. History In 1853, following the proposed distribution by Commissioner of Crown Lands, John Rolph, the Governor General in Council, Charles Monck, 4th Viscount Monck, assigned the Nipissing, Algonquin, and Ottawa Indians of the Timiscaming region a reserve of , located along the Ottawa River, and originally known as Temiscamingue Reserve. But piece-by-piece, the reserve was reduced in size when the Indians ceded lots back to the government in 1897, 1898, every year from 1905 to 1917, 1939, 1953, and 1955. Intersectional Feminism
Intersectionality is an analytical framework for understanding how aspects of a person's social and political identities combine to create different modes of discrimination and privilege. Intersectionality identifies multiple factors of advantage and disadvantage. Examples of these factors include gender, caste, sex, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion, disability, weight, and physical appearance. These intersecting and overlapping social identities may be both empowering and oppressing.
