Atiur Rahman Atik is a Bangladeshi politician and a former Member of Parliament from Sherpur-1. He belongs to the Bangladesh Awami League Party. Early life Atik was born on 1 December 1957. He has a B.A. degree. Career Atik was elected to Jatiya Sangsad 5 times in 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018 general elections from Sherpur-1 constituency. In the 2024 general election he got the Awami League nomination but lost the election to Chanuar Hossain Chanu an Independent candidate from his own party. Muhammad Kamaruzzaman
Muhammad Kamaruzzaman (4 July 1952 – 11 April 2015) was a Bangladeshi politician and journalist who served as the senior assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and was convicted of war crimes during the 1971 Liberation war of Bangladesh. He was executed by hanging at Dhaka Central Jail at 22:01 on 11 April 2015. Besides his political career, Kamaruzzaman also was the editor of the ''Weekly Sonar Bangla''. On 9 May 2013 the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced him to death after it found Kamaruzzaman guilty of crimes against humanity including genocide, killing, rape, looting, arson, and deportation of people during the Bangladesh Liberation War. 2024 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections are scheduled to be held in Bangladesh in January 2024. Background The current Sangsad ( 11th) is scheduled to expire on 29 January 2024, as the first session of this parliament sat on 30 January 2019 and the tenure of a parliament lasts five years. The Awami League won the 2018 general elections and formed the government. Incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hinted she does not intend to lead her party, the Awami League, into another election. Electoral system The 350 members of the Jatiya Sangsad consist of 300 directly elected seats using first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies, and an additional 50 seats reserved for women. Sherpur district ( bn, শেরপুর জেলা, ''Sherpur Jela'' also ''Sherpur Zila'') is a district in Northern Bangladesh. It is a part of Mymensingh Division. Sherpur district was a sub-division of Jamalpur District before 1984. It was upgraded to a district on February 22, 1984. Sherpur City is located about north of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. Etymology The name "Sherpur" can't be found in ancient history. During the rules of emperor Akbar, this area was called "Dash Kahonia Baju". The previous name of Brahmaputra river in this area was "Louhitto Sagar" which was situated in a vast area from the south border of Sherpur municipality to Jamalpur Ghat. The people of this area had to pay 10 kahon coins to the leaseholders as an annual tax for travelling in the river. The Jatiya Sangsad ( bn, জাতীয় সংসদ, lit=National Parliament, translit=Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the ''Sangsad'' or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved exclusively for women. Elected occupants are called Member of Parliament, or MP. The 11th National Parliamentary Election was held on 30 December 2018. Elections to the body are held every five years, unless a parliament is dissolved earlier by the President of Bangladesh. 1991 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 27 February 1991. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) emerged as the largest party in parliament, winning 140 of the 300 directly-elected seats. The BNP formed a government with the support of the Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, and on 20 March Khaleda Zia was sworn in for her first term as Prime Minister. Roushan Ershad (born 19 July 1943) is a Jatiya Party (Ershad), Bangladesh Jatiya Party politician. She is the current Jatiya Sangsad member from Mymensingh-4 constituency and the incumbent Leader of the Opposition (Bangladesh), Leader of the Opposition in the 2018 Bangladeshi general election, 11th parliament. She is the Chief Patron of the Jatiya Party (Ershad) and the widow of former Bangladesh president Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Political Career As the First Lady during 1982–1990, Ershad was active in social welfare and in promoting the rights of women and children.
