Shenandoah Life Insurance Company
The Shenandoah Life Insurance Company is an insurance company based in Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Founded in 1916, the company operated until 2012 as a policyholder-owned mutual insurance company when it was sold to United Prosperity Life. In 2012, the company was demutualized into a subsidiary of Prosperity Life Insurance Group, LLC. Media properties Shenandoah Life entered radio in 1940, when it signed on WSLS radio; the call letters stand for Shenandoah Life Station. An FM station followed in 1947. WPLY (610 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, and serving Southwest Virginia and the New River Valley. WPLY simulcasts a sports radio format with WPLI 1390 AM in Lynchburg. Both stations are owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc. Most programming is supplied by Fox Sports Radio. By day, WPLY is powered at 5,000 watts. But at night, when radio waves travel farther, it reduces power to 1,000 watts to protect other stations on 610 AM. WSLQ (99.1 FM "Q99") is a commercial radio station licensed to Roanoke, Virginia, serving the New River Valley and Southwest Virginia. The station airs an adult contemporary radio format and is owned and operated by Mel Wheeler, Inc. The studios and offices are on Electric Road in Roanoke. WSLQ's transmitter is off Honeysuckle Road in Bent Mountain. WSLQ has one of the largest coverage areas of all FM radio stations in the United States. Its effective radiated power (ERP) is 200,000 watts, broadcasting from a tower at 1962 feet in height above average terrain (HAAT). The Class C signal can be heard into West Virginia and North Carolina, and at times is picked up more than 200 miles away.
