Shellharbour
Shellharbour (also known as Shellharbour Village) is a suburb located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. It also gives its name to the local government area, City of Shellharbour, and its central business district, Shellharbour City Centre. The suburb is centred on the small recreational harbour named Shell Harbour. It has two main beaches: Shellharbour Beach, which runs to Barrack Point and Shellharbour South Beach, which runs toward Bass Point. Shellharbour hosts Harbourside Markets on the fourth Sunday of the month, in Little Park. History and culture The area was inhabited by indigenous Australians for thousands of years. The City of Shellharbour is a local government area in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. The city is located about south of Sydney and covers the southern suburbs of the Wollongong urban area centred on Shellharbour and it had an estimated population of 68,460 at the . The area is bordered by the City of Wollongong to the north, with the boundary being the Lake Illawarra entrance (and the suburb of Lake Illawarra) and Macquarie Rivulet ( Albion Park Rail). John Daniel FitzGerald
John Daniel FitzGerald (11 June 1862 – 4 July 1922) was a politician, union official, journalist and barrister in New South Wales, Australia. Early life Jack FitzGerald was born in Shellharbour to schoolteacher John Daniel FitzGerald and Mary Ann Cullen. He attended Shellharbour Public School, Fort Street Public School and St Mary's Cathedral School in Sydney before being apprenticed as a compositor in Bathurst. A founding member of the New South Wales Typographical Association, he served as its president from 1887 to 1888. He was elected to the executive of the Trades and Labor Council. He supported maritime workers in the 1890 strike, paying his own way to travel to England to raise support for the strikers. Ron Costello (born 1942) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s. He played for the Western Suburbs Magpies, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, New South Wales and for the Australian national side. From Shellharbour on the South Coast of New South Wales, Costello went to Shellharbour Public School (1948–1954), and then went to the Western Suburbs Magpies in Sydney and played lower grades in 1964-1965. Beverley Whitfield
Beverley Joy Whitfield (15 June 1954 – 20 August 1996) was an Australian breaststroke swimmer of the 1970s, who won a gold medal in the 200-metre breaststroke at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. She was coached by Terry Gathercole and Don Talbot. Biography The daughter of a fitter and turner who worked in the Wollongong steelworks for more than 35 years, Whitfield was taught to swim along with her sister and their cousins at the age four by her maternal uncle, who was active in the local ''Learn to Swim'' program.
