Shell City, Minnesota
Shell City is a ghost town in section 2 of Shell River Township in Wadena County, Minnesota, United States. History The village of Shell City was established by William E. Kindred as the Kindred post office in 1879. The townsite was then sold to Francis M. Yoder and Sewall Chandler in 1881 and the name was changed to Shell City in 1882. The town failed to develop as hoped, and the post office was discontinued in 1901. Today, the cemetery, a campground and a horse camp that share Shell City's name are all that hint at the townsite's location. Shell River Township is a township in Wadena County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 276 at the 2000 census. The township was named for the Shell River, which flows through it; the river was named for abundant clam and mussel shells found along its banks. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.1 square miles (93.6 km); 34.8 square miles (90.1 km) of it is land and 1.3 square miles (3.5 km) of it (3.71%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 276 people, 102 households, and 73 families residing in the township. The population density was 7.9 people per square mile (3.1/km). There were 185 housing units at an average density of 5.3/sq mi (2.1/km). The racial makeup of the township was 95.65% White, 0.72% African American, 1.09% Native American, and 2.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population. Wadena County, Minnesota
Wadena County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,065. Its county seat is Wadena. History The newly organized Minnesota Legislature created the county on June 11, 1858. A settlement began at the future city of Wadena in 1871, and by 1873 a post office was in operation there. The settlement was designated the county seat when the state legislature organized the county on February 21, 1873. The town took the name of a trading post 15 miles (24 km) to the east, which had flourished for several years but was largely abandoned by that time. The trading post was named for Chief Wadena, an Ojibwe Indian chief of the late 19th century in northwestern Minnesota. Wadena County comprises 15 townships, first surveyed in 1863.
