Shelby Wilson (curler)
Shelby Autrie Wilson (born July 14, 1937) is an American wrestler and Olympic champion. Career A native of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Wilson was a two-time Oklahoma state tournament runner-up while in high school, and was a two-time NCAA runner-up in college at Oklahoma State. At the 1960 U.S. Olympic Trials, he finished in third place. During the Olympic Training Camp he successfully challenged the trials' second and first-place finishers to gain the starting position. He won Olympic Gold in Rome, in the freestyle lightweight (67 kg) division. His Olympic gold medal was the first major tournament that Wilson had won. Ponca City, Oklahoma
Ponca City ( iow, Chína Uhánⁿdhe) is a city in Kay County in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The city was named after the Ponca tribe. Ponca City had a population of 25,387 at the time of the 2010 census- and a population of 24,424 in the 2020 census. History Ponca City was created in 1893 as "New Ponca" after the United States opened the Cherokee Outlet for European-American settlement during the Cherokee Strip land run, the largest land run in United States history. The site for Ponca City was selected for its proximity to the Arkansas River and the presence of a freshwater spring near the river. The city was laid out by Burton Barnes, who drew up the first survey of the city and sold certificates for the lots he had surveyed. National Wrestling Hall Of Fame And Museum
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum is a museum and hall of fame for amateur wrestling, headquartered in Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 2010, it began operating the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. History The museum was awarded to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1972 by a decision of the United States Wrestling Federation, which chose Stillwater over a competing bid from Waterloo, Iowa. The museum opened on September 11, 1976. In 2010, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame absorbed the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, previously operated by the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum. The Dan Gable Museum had opened in 1998 in Newton, Iowa, and moved to Waterloo in 2006. In May 2016, the NWHOF voted to revoke all honors given to Dennis Hastert after his conviction, the first time the Hall of Fame has ever punished a now-former inductee. Owen Valley Community High School
Owen Valley Community High School, also known as "OVHS", is a public high school located in Spencer, Indiana. History Built in 1971, OVHS is the result of a consolidation of several smaller schools located within Owen County. The three schools that were merged to make Owen Valley High School are Patricksburg High School, Spencer High School, and Gosport High School. The merger of these highschools is the namesake of the school paper. Additionally, those former high schools are now elementary schools. In fall of 2003, ground was broken on the renovation and additions that have been made to the OVHS. The class of 2003 was the last to graduate from the original 1971 building. The gift from the senior class in 2003 was a cornerstone made of limestone from the Bybee Bros. Stone Quarry in Ellettsville, Indiana for the new addition and can be viewed from the front of the building. The Cornerstone was written by graduating Class Secretary Thomas Barnett.
