Shawnee is an unincorporated community and post office in northern Park County, Colorado, United States, that is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Description Shawnee is situated along the North Fork South Platte River, west of Bailey on U.S. Route 285. Shawnee consists of a general store and post office, and surrounding houses, on the hillside south of the highway overlooking the river valley. History A post office called Shawnee has been in operation since 1900. The community takes its name from nearby Shawnee Peak. The Shawnee Historic District was added to the NRHP July 8, 2010. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. The Shawnee are an Algonquian-speaking indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. In the 17th century they lived in Pennsylvania, and in the 18th century they were in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, with some bands in Kentucky and Alabama. By the 19th century, they were forcibly removed to Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and ultimately Indian Territory, which became Oklahoma under the 1830 Indian Removal Act. Today, Shawnee people are enrolled in three federally recognized tribes, all headquartered in Oklahoma: the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe of Indians, Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma, and Shawnee Tribe. Bailey is an unincorporated community and U.S. Post Office in northeastern Park County, Colorado, United States. Bailey's Post Office ZIP Code is 80421. The town community consists of several small businesses, restaurants and churches. The North Fork South Platte River flows through Bailey. History William Bailey settled a ranch and built a stage station known as Bailey's Ranch in 1864. Bailey also built a hotel at the station, and the town eventually became known as Bailey. The Denver & South Park Railroad reached Bailey in 1878, and the Bailey Post Office opened on November 20, 1878. North Fork South Platte River
The North Fork South Platte River is a tributary of the South Platte River, approximately 50 miles (80 km) long, in central Colorado in the United States. The river is located near the headwaters of the South Platte in the Rocky Mountains southwest of Denver, draining a rugged area of the Front Range just south of the basin of Clear Creek. It rises at the continental divide near Webster Pass (Colorado) in northwestern Park County, flows through a canyon to the southeast, and is joined by Geneva Creek at the town of Grant. Downstream from Grant it is followed by U.S. Highway 285 until Bailey, where it cuts through a remote section of the foothills. It joins the South Platte from the west at the lower end of the Platte Canyon in the mountains approximately 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Denver.
