Shariff Kabungsuwan
Shariff Kabunsuan was a short-lived province of the Philippines within the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) that existed from 2006 to 2008. Its designated seat of government was Datu Odin Sinsuat. Initially comprising ten municipalities carved out of Maguindanao, Shariff Kabunsuan was created by virtue of ''Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 201''; this law was nullified by the Supreme Court of the Philippines in 2008, thus disestablishing the province. Upi, Shariff Kabunsuan
Upi, officially the Municipality of Upi ( Maguindanaon: ''Inged nu Upi''; Iranun: ''Inged a Upi''; tl, Bayan ng Upi), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 59,004 people. The municipality was part of the province of Shariff Kabunsuan from October 2006 until its nullification by the Supreme Court in July 2008. Etymology The name ''Upi'' probably derives from the term ''ufi''. ''Ufi'' is a Teduray name for a certain tree ( piper betel) that grew abundantly in the place in the early years. The bark of the ''ufi'' is used with betel nuts for chewing or ''mama'' in Teduray. The Teduray are the native inhabitants of present-day Upi. Cotabato City, officially the City of Cotabato ( Maguindanaon: ''Kuta nu Kutawatu'', Jawi: كوتا نو كوتاواتو; Iranun: ''Bandar a Kotawato'', بندر ا كوتاواتو; fil, Lungsod ng Cotabato), is a third class independent component city in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 325,079 people, making it as the most populated city under the independent component city status. Cotabato City was formerly a part and the regional center of Region XII, but due to the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, it is now part of Bangsamoro and serves as the regional center. Northern Kabuntalan, officially the Municipality of Northern Kabuntalan ( Maguindanaon: ''Ingud nu Northern Kabuntalan''; Iranun: ''Inged a Northern Kabuntalan''; tl, Bayan ng Northern Kabuntalan), is a 5th class municipality in the province of Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 26,277 people. During the second regular session of the first legislative assembly of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, the regional legislature created Northern Kabuntalan out of 11 barangays of Kabuntalan, by virtue of ''Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act No. 206'', which was subsequently ratified in a plebiscite held on December 30, 2006. Mohammed Kabungsuwan
Shariff Muhammed Kabungsuwan''Ang Bayan Sa Labas Ng Maynila'' (2008), pg 195 (Malay: ''Muhammad Kebungsuwan'', Jawi: شريف کبوڠسووان) was the first Sultan of Maguindanao in the Philippines. A native of Johore in Maritime Southeast Asia, Kabungsuwan re-settled in Mindanao in the Philippines where he preached Islam to the native tribes around the region. Origin Maguindanao genealogy records state that Kabungsuwan's father was an Arab and a sharif or a descendant of the Islamic prophet Mohammed while his mother was Malay. His recorded name "Kabungsuwan" in Maguindanao tradition means "youngest" and is said to the be the youngest among three children. His eldest brother, Ahmad is said to have established the Bruneian Sultanate while his other brother Alawi is said to have set up the Sulu Sultanate. ARMM Regional Assembly, also known as ARMM Regional Legislative Assembly (''Pangrehiyong Kapulungang Pambatasan ng ARMM''), was the devolved unicameral regional legislature of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
