Shamus (video Game)
''Shamus'' is a flip-screen shooter with light action-adventure game elements written by Cathryn Mataga (credited as William Mataga) and published by Synapse Software. The original Atari 8-bit family version is 16K in size and was released on disk and tape in 1982. The game was ported to the Apple II, VIC-20, Commodore 64, TRS-80 Color Computer, TI-99/4A, and IBM PC. Several of these were published by Atarisoft. It was later sold on cartridge by Atari Corporation following the launch of the Atari XEGS in 1987. " Funeral March of a Marionette", the theme song from '' Alfred Hitchcock Presents'', plays on the title screen. According to Ihor Wolosenko, co-founder of Synapse, ''Shamus'' made the company famous by giving it a reputation for quality. Cathryn Mataga
Cathryn Mataga (born William Mataga) is a game programmer and founder of independent video game company Junglevision. Under the name William, she wrote Atari 8-bit family games for Synapse Software in the early to mid 1980s, including '' Shamus'', a flip-screen shooter. Career Mataga designed the game '' Shamus'' in 1982, credited under the name William for the Atari 8-bit family. Much of the game's appeal was said to come from Mataga's sense of humor, such as creating a "grand rendition" of the Alfred Hitchcock theme song in the game's introduction. Mataga followed it with a sequel '' Shamus: Case II'' and scrolling shooter ''Zeppelin''. Steve Hales of Synapse Software, in an interview for the book '' Halcyon Days'', states that he and Mataga convinced company founder Ihor Wolosenko to get the company into interactive fiction. ''Computer Gaming World'' (CGW) was an American computer game magazine published between 1981 and 2006. One of the few magazines of the era to survive the video game crash of 1983, it was sold to Ziff Davis in 1993. ''Berzerk'' is a multidirectional shooter designed by Alan McNeil and released for arcades in 1980 by Stern Electronics of Chicago. Following Taito's ''Stratovox'', it is one of the first arcade video games with speech synthesis. ''Berzerk'' places the player in a series of top-down, maze-like rooms containing armed robots.
