Shamsul Alam (Bir Uttam)
Shamsul Alam (1947 – 8 December 2022) was a veteran of Bangladesh Liberation war. For his bravery during Operation Kilo Flight the Government of Bangladesh awarded him the title of Bir Uttom. He was awarded the Independence Day Award in 2017. Early life Alam was born in 1947 in Patilapara, Baufal Upazila, Patuakhali District. Career Alam joined Pakistan Air Force and was stationed in Rawalpindi, West Pakistan (now Pakistan) in 1971. When the Bangladesh Liberation war started, he kept looking for opportunities to join it. He came to Dhaka to join the war. He was immediately detained in Dhaka. In August–September 1971, the Pakistani government announced a general amnesty for the detainees. Alam was released in the first week of September. A few days later he fled from Dhaka to India and joined the war. Bir Uttom
Bir Uttom ( bn, বীর উত্তম, lit=Great Valiant Hero) is the second highest award for individual gallantry in Bangladesh after the Bir Sreshtho and the highest gallantry award for a living individual. Since the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, 69 people have been awarded the Bir Uttom. Recipients This award was declared on 15 December 1973. A total of 67 people have been rewarded for their bravery and dedication in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. Lieutenant G. M. Mushfiqur Rahman Bir Uttam (1966-1989) was posted in 1 Field Artillery Regiment of Bangladesh Army in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. On 8 September 1989, he led a 17 member team of Bangladesh Army soldiers and attacked a terrorist Shanti Bahini camp. Operation Kilo Flight
Kilo Flight is the code name for the Mukti Bahini combat aviation formation during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. It consisted of one DHC-3 Otter plane and one Alouette III helicopter, both carrying rocket pods and machine guns for launching hit-and-run attacks on Pakistani targets, and one DC-3 Dakota for logistical missions. 9 Bengali pilots and 58 ex PAF personnel formed the unit under the command of Group Captain A. K. Khandker in September 1971. The aircraft were supplied by Indian Authorities and the formation was led by Squadron Leader Sultan Mahmud under the operational control of IAF base Jorhat. The unit started training in October 1971 at Dimapur in Nagaland, and this unit was the first to launch airstrikes on Pakistani targets in East Pakistan on December 4, 1971, by attacking oil depots at Narayanganj and Chittagong. Independence Day Award
The Independence Day Award ( bn, স্বাধীনতা পদক), also termed Independence Award ( bn, স্বাধীনতা পুরস্কার), Swadhinata Padak, and Swadhinata Puroskar, is the highest state award given by the government of Bangladesh. Introduced in 1977 by president Ziaur Rahman, this award is bestowed upon Bangladeshi citizens or organizations in recognition of substantial contribution to one of many fields, including the War of Liberation, the Language Movement, education, literature, journalism, public service, science and technology, medical science, social science, song, games and sports, fine arts, rural development, and other areas. Akram Ahmed
Akram Ahmed was a veteran of the Bangladesh Liberation War as a pilot as part of Operation Kilo Flight, the beginning of Bangladesh Air Force. For his bravery in the war, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the title of Bir Uttom, one of a few civilians to have received the award. Early life Career In 1971, Akram Ahmed worked in the East Pakistan Plant Protection Directorate. At that time, the Plant Protection Directorate had its own crop duster to control insects. When the Bangladesh Liberation War started, he fled from Dhaka to India in May. There he met Khaled Musharraf and expressed interest in taking part in the ground war.
