Shamshadin District
The Shamshadin District ( hy, Շամշադինի շրջան) was a ''raion'' (district) of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1929 and later in 1991 of the Republic of Armenia until its disestablishment in 1995. The Shamshadin district today constitutes a southeastern part of the Tavush Province ( ''marz''). Its administrative centre was the town of Berd. History The Shamshadin district was formed on the territory of the Armenian SSR on 24 June 1929, originally a part of the Dilijan uezd which had been separated from the tsarist Kazakh uezd in 1921. Shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union, the administration of the Republic of Armenia consolidated the Shamshadin, Noyemberyan and Ijevan districts into the larger Tavush Province. Demographics According to the 1939 census, Shamshadin was the most homogenous region of the Armenian SSR. Berd, Armenia
Berd ( hy, Բերդ) is a town and urban municipal community in the Tavush Province of Armenia. The town is located to the west of the Tavush river, from Yerevan, surrounded by low mountains. Near the city are the ruins of the Tavush fortress (10th century) and the Nor Varagavank and Khoranashat monasteries (12th century). Other monasteries nearby include Shkhmuradi, Srveghi, and Kaptavank. Etymology ''Berd ( Armenian: բերդ)'' means "fortress" or castle. The small city was named ''Berd'' because the ruins of the Tavush castle were located in the outskirts of Berd. The town was formerly known as ''Berdagyugh'', ''Gamma, ''Tavuzghala'', ''Tauzkend'', ''Volorut'', ''Shlorut'' and ''Ghalakyand''. Hayk Harut’yuni Chobanyan ( hy, Հայկ Հարությունի Չոբանյան; born March 5, 1973) is an Armenian historian, public official. He has been the Minister of High-Tech Industry (02.04.2021-04.08.2021).
