Prior to the establishment of the ''raions'', Soviet Armenia consisted of nine ''uezds'', three of which (Dilijan, Meghri, and Lori-Pambak) were formed after the Sovietization of Armenia and the 1921 delineation of the South Caucasian republics' frontiers.
