Shamrock (yacht)
''Shamrock'' was a racing yacht built in 1898 that was the unsuccessful Irish challenger for the 1899 America's Cup against the United States defender, ''Columbia''. Design ''Shamrock'' was designed by third-generation Scottish boatbuilder, William Fife III, and built in 1898 by J. Thorneycroft & Co., at Church Wharf, Chiswick, for owner Sir Thomas Lipton of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club (and also of Lipton Tea fame). However her draft was too great for construction at Chiswick and she was built at Millwall. ''Shamrock'' (also known as ''Shamrock I'', to distinguish her from her successors) was built in 1898 under a shroud of secrecy, and christened by Lady Russell of Killowen at its launch on 26 June 1899. ''Columbia'' was an American racing yacht built in 1899 for the America's Cup races. She was the defender of the tenth America's Cup race that same year against British challenger ''Shamrock'' as well as the defender of the eleventh America's Cup race in 1901 against British challenger '' Shamrock II''. She was the first vessel to win the trophy twice in a row (a record not equaled until '' Intrepid''s back-to-back wins in 1967 and 1970.) Design ''Columbia'', a fin keel sloop, was designed and built in 1898-99 by Nathanael Herreshoff and the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company for owners J. His Majesty's Yacht ''Britannia'' was a gaff-rigged cutter built in 1893 for RYS Commodore Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. She served both himself and his son King George V with a long racing career. Design ''Britannia'' was ordered in 1892 by the Prince of Wales and designed by George Lennox Watson. She was a near sister ship to the Watson-designed which challenged for the 1893 America's Cup. Details of the commission were arranged on the Prince’s behalf by William Jamieson who represented him and liaised closely with Watson. The build cost was £8,300 and like ''Valkyrie II'', ''Britannia'' was built at the D&W Henderson shipyard in Partick on the River Clyde. William Fife
William Fife Jr. (15 June 1857 – 11 August 1944), also known as William Fife III, was the third generation of a family of Scottish yacht designers and builders. In his time, William Fife designed around 600 yachts, including two contenders for the America's Cup. The Royal Yachting Association was formed in 1875 to standardise rules, and Fife and his rival G.L. Watson, were instrumental in these rule changes. Around one third of Fife's yachts still exist. His last designs were built in 1938. Biography Fife was born in Fairlie, North Ayrshire on the Firth of Clyde.
