Shaikh Shamim Ahmed Azmi
Shaikh Shamim Ahmed (20 March 1938 – 22 September 2019) was an Indian politician and social worker. In 1980, he was elected as an MLA from the Mumbai Chinchpokli Constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate. Early life Shaikh Shamim Ahmed, the son of Shaikh Azizur Rahman, was born into a family of landlords in the small town of Sudanipur (Shudnipur), in Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh. Career In 1980, Ahmed was elected as an MLA from the Chinchpokli Constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate. He was a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1985. Political and social activities In 1977 at the call of "Jail bharo andolan" (fill up the jails) in support of Indira Gandhi, (former Prime Minister of India) Ahmed took the initiative and courted arrest with 96 supporters at Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. Azamgarh
Azamgarh is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the headquarters of Azamgarh division, which consists of Ballia, Mau and Azamgarh districts. Azamgarh is situated on the bank of Tamsa River (Tons). It is located east of the state capital Lucknow and 809 km from national capital, Delhi. History Azamgarh, one of the easternmost districts(a district in Purvanchal sub-region) of Uttar Pradesh, once formed a part of the ancient Kosala kingdom, except its north-eastern part. Azamgarh is also known as the land of the sage Durvasa whose ashram was located in Phulpur tehsil, near the confluence of Tamsa and Majhuee rivers, north of the Phulpur. The Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha or the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the legislature of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is situated in the Nariman Point area of South Mumbai in the capital Mumbai. Presently, 288 members of the Legislative Assembly are directly elected from the single-seat constituencies. Chinchpokli
Chinchpokli ( mr, चिंचपोकळी) is a neighbourhood in South Mumbai. It is also the name of a railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai suburban railway. Historical British era spellings include Chinchpugli and Chinchpooghly. The neighbourhood is named after the Marathi words for tamarind (''chinch'') and betel nut (''pofali''). History The Chinchpokli Railway station was opened in 1877. There is a Jewish Cemetery, laid out by Elias David Sassoon in 1878, which lies parallel to the railway tracks.
