Shaheen Samad
Shaheen Samad (born 27 December 1952) is a Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet singer. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2016 by the Government of Bangladesh. Early life Samad was born in Kushtia to Shamsun Nahar Rahima Khatun and Samsul Huda. She spent her childhood at Jalpaiguri mostly. She took lessons from Ram Gopal, Fazlul Haque Mia, Sanjida Khatun and Ful Mohammad. She entered Chhayanaut at the age of 13. After coming back from London she learned singing from Sudhin Das. Career Samad is a former artiste of the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, the clandestine radio station broadcast to revolutionaries and occupied population during the Bangladesh Liberation War. During the Liberation War in 1971, Samad joined a cultural troupe, named ''Bangladesh Mukti Shangrami Shilpi Shangstha''. Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra
Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra ( bn, স্বাধীন বাংলা বেতার কেন্দ্র, lit=Free Bengal Radio Centre) was the radio broadcasting centre of Bengali nationalist forces during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. This station played an important role in the liberation struggle, broadcasting the Declaration of Independence and increasing the morale of Bangladeshis during the war. In 1971, radio was the only media reaching to the far ends of Bangladesh. The station ran a propaganda campaign throughout the war. Mr Sufi barkat-e-khoda was one of the personalities of the show. Catherine Masud
Catherine Masud ( bn, ক্যাথরিন মাসুদ) is an American-born filmmaker, residing in Bangladesh from 1995–2015. She now lives in the United States. She has collaborated with her husband & filmmaking partner Tareque Masud to make numerous shorts, documentaries and features, many of which have been nationally/internationally awarded and shown around the world. Since Tareque's untimely death in August 2011, Catherine has devoted herself to the archiving and preservation of his work, and the completion of their unfinished oeuvre. Professional life A graduate of Brown University, she also studied fine arts at the Art Institute of Chicago, and film production in New York. Among many other films, she produced and co-wrote the acclaimed feature Matir Moyna (The Clay Bird), directed by Tareque, which won the International Critics' Prize at Cannes. Tareque Masud
Tareque Masud (6 December 1956 – 13 August 2011) was a Bangladeshi independent film director, film producer, screenwriter and lyricist. He first found success with the films ''Muktir Gaan'' (1995) and ''Matir Moina'' (2002), for which he won three international awards, including the International Critics' FIPRESCI Prize, in the Directors' Fortnight at 2002 Cannes Film Festival. The film became Bangladesh's first film to compete for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Masud died in a road accident on 13 August 2011 while returning to Dhaka from Manikganj on the Dhaka-Aricha highway after visiting a filming location. Masud was working on '' Kagojer Phool'' (The Paper Flower). In 2012, he posthumously received Ekushey Padak, the second highest civilian award of Bangladesh. This is a documentary film which explores the impact of cultural identity on the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, where music and song provided a source of inspiration to the freedom fighters and a spiritual bond for the whole emerging nation. Sudhin Das
Sudhin Das (; 30 April 1930 – 27 June 2017) was a Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet musician. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh. Early life and career Das was born in Bagichagaon, Comilla, to Nishi Kanta Das and Hemprabha Das on 30 April 1930. Das started learning music at Sangeet Shikhharthee Sammilan in Comilla, established by his elder brother Suren Das in 1942. Das was enlisted in Radio Pakistan when he was a college student in 1948. In 1985, after finishing his learning, Das moved to Dhaka and joined as a member of the ''Nazrul Sangeet Promanikoron Board'' at Nazrul Institute. He taught Nazrul Sangeet to the young artists of the institute. Personal life Das was married to Neelima Das. She is also an artist of Nazrul Sangeet. Chhayanaut
The Chhayanaut Sangeet Vidyatan ( bn, ছায়ানট) is an institution devoted to Bengali culture, founded in Bangladesh in 1961. As in the case of many similar organizations, it was established during Pakistani rule in Bangladesh to promote and nurture the cultural and musical heritage of Bengal. Every year, Chhayanaut arranges activities in order to celebrate the Pahela Boishakh, the first day of the Bengali new year.
