''Schimmen van schoonheid'' (English "''Shades of beauty''") is a collection of short stories, written by Louis Couperus and published by Van Holkema & Warendorf in 1912. It is not known how many copies were printed for the first edition, but this edition was in any case sold out by 1929. The second edition was published in 1962 by Querido in the so-called Salamander series (number 71). Description For the stories in Couperus' book ''Schimmen van schoonheid'' Couperus was inspired by classical antiquity and classical mythology. The story ''De Nacht van Ishthâr'' is about an Assyrian relief, such as that of Ashurbanipal in the British Museum, which comes to life. The story ''Frynè'' represents the triumph of the sensuous beauty, as personified in Phryne. The short story ''De Doop'' deals with the conversion of emperor Constantine the Great to Christianity, while ''De Gladiator'' takes place in the gladiator school in Ravenna. Louis Marie-Anne Couperus (10 June 1863 – 16 July 1923) was a Dutch novelist and poet. His oeuvre contains a wide variety of genres: lyric poetry, psychological and historical novels, novellas, short stories, fairy tales, feuilletons and sketches. The Digital Library for Dutch Literature (Dutch: Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren or DBNL) is a website (showing the abbreviation as dbnl) about Dutch language and Dutch literature. It contains thousands of literary texts, secondary literature and additional information, like biographies, portrayals etcetera, and hyperlinks. The DBNL is an initiative by the DBNL foundation that was founded in 1999 by the Society of Dutch Literature (Dutch: Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde). Building of the DNBL was made possible by donations, among others, from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (Dutch: Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek or NWO) and the Nederlandse Taalunie. The ''Leeuwarder Courant'' is the oldest daily newspaper in the Netherlands. Founded by Abraham Ferwerda, it first appeared in 1752. The ''Leeuwarder Courant'' was the first paper in the Dutch province Friesland and its capital Leeuwarden. It is considered a "popular" (as opposed to "quality") newspaper.
