Carl Keenan Seyfert
Carl Keenan Seyfert (February 11, 1911 – June 13, 1960) was an American astronomer. He is best known for his 1943 research paper on high-excitation line emission from the centers of some spiral galaxies, which are named Seyfert galaxy, Seyfert galaxies after him. Seyfert's Sextet, a group of galaxies, is also named after him. Biography Seyfert was born and raised in Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio, then attended Harvard University, starting in 1929. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in 1933, and his Ph.D. in astronomy in 1936. His thesis was "Studies of the External Galaxies", supervised by Harlow Shapley. The thesis dealt with colors and magnitudes of galaxy, galaxies. In 1935 Seyfert married astronomer Muriel Mussells Seyfert, Muriel Elizabeth Mussels, who was a former Harvard Computers, Harvard computer who made contributions to the study of ring nebulae. They had two children, daughter Gail Carol and son Carl Keenan Seyfert, Jr. In 1936 Seyfert joined the staff of the new McD ...

Gabriele Seyfert
Gabriele "Gaby" Seyfert (later Rüger, then Messerschmidt, now Körner, born 23 November 1948) is a German former figure skater. She is a two-time World champion (1969, 1970), and the 1968 Olympic silver medalist. She is the first lady to successfully land a triple loop jump in competition. Skating career Seyfert skated for the club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and represented East Germany. Her coach was her mother Jutta Müller, who also coached 1984 and 1988 Olympic champion Katarina Witt. She was a long-time rival of Peggy Fleming, but never defeated her. In 1966, after two silver medals at the Europeans and the Worlds, she was voted as "the GDR female athlete of the year". She became the first woman to land a clean triple loop. Seyfert ended her figure skating career in 1970. Unlike Peggy Fleming, she was not allowed to skate professionally. Offers by Holiday on Ice were refused by East German authorities. She was a Stasi informer under the codename "Perle". Seyfert turned t ...

Johann Caspar Seyfert
Johann Caspar Seyfert (1697 – 26 May 1767, Augsburg) was a German composer, violinist and lute player. He was a music director in Augsburg where he was born and died. In 1746 he added a fourth volume to the ''Augsburger Tafel-Confect'', which Valentin Rathgeber had published in 1733, 1737 and 1739. The short title abbreviates ''Ohren-vergnügendes und Gemüth-ergötzendes Tafel-Confect'' (''Augsburg Table Confectionery'', short for ''Table Confectionery, Pleasuring the Ears and Delightful to the Soul''), a collection of songs meant to be performed for dessert, whereas a ''Tafelmusik'' was performed during a main course.

Seyfert (crater)
Seyfert is a prominent lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It is the fifth largest satellite in the Solar System and the largest and most massive relative to its parent planet, with a diameter about one-quarter that of Earth (comparable to the width of .... It was named after American astronomer Carl Keenan Seyfert. It lies behind the eastern limb of the Moon, to the east of the crater Espin. Just to the north of Seyfert is the crater Harriot and equally close to the south is Polzunov. The outer rim of this crater is slightly elongated to the north, and the northeastern rim is overlain by the satellite crater Seyfert A. This overlapping impact crater has a central ridge on its interior floor. There is a low ridge near the midpoint of Seyfert, but it is less prominent. The inner wall of Seyfert is wider along the northern edge, west of Seyfert A. Several small craters lie along the rim and in ...

Seyfert Galaxy
Seyfert galaxies are one of the two largest groups of active galaxies, along with quasars. They have quasar-like nuclei (very luminous, distant and bright sources of electromagnetic radiation) with very high surface brightnesses whose spectra reveal strong, high-ionisation emission lines, but unlike quasars, their host galaxies are clearly detectable. Seyfert galaxies account for about 10% of all galaxies and are some of the most intensely studied objects in astronomy, as they are thought to be powered by the same phenomena that occur in quasars, although they are closer and less luminous than quasars. These galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centers which are surrounded by accretion discs of in-falling material. The accretion discs are believed to be the source of the observed ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet emission and absorption lines provide the best diagnostics for the composition of the surrounding material. Seen in visible light, most Seyfert galaxies ...

Seyfert's Sextet
Seyfert's Sextet is a group of galaxies about 190 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens. The group appears to contain six members, but one of the galaxies, NGC 6027d, is a background object and another "galaxy," NGC 6027e, is actually a part of the tail from galaxy NGC 6027. The gravitational interaction among these galaxies should continue for hundreds of millions of years. Ultimately, the galaxies will merge to form a single giant elliptical galaxy. Discovery The group was discovered by Carl Keenan Seyfert using photographic plates made at the Barnard Observatory of Vanderbilt University. When these results were first published in 1951, this group was the most compact group ever identified. Members See also * Wild's Triplet * Zwicky's Triplet * Robert's Quartet * Stephan's Quintet and NGC 7331 Group ( Also known as the ''Deer Lick Group'', about half a degree northeast of Stephan's Quintet) * Copeland Septet The Copeland Septet (also Copeland' ...
