Services, Industrial, Professional And Technical Union
SIPTU (; ''Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union''; ga, An Ceardchumann Seirbhísí, Tionsclaíoch, Gairmiúil agus Teicniúil) is Ireland's largest trade union, with around 200,000 members. Most of these members are in the Republic of Ireland, although the union does have a Northern Ireland District Committee. Its head office, Liberty Hall, is in Dublin, and the union has five industrial divisions, three in the private sector and two in the public sector. SIPTU is affiliated to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions History The Union has its roots in two separate trade unions both founded by the trade union leader and socialist activist James Larkin; the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and the Federated Workers' Union of Ireland. Irish Writers' Union
The Irish Writers' Union (IWU) is an organisation devoted to furthering the professional interests and needs of writers in various media in Ireland. The Union is based in the Irish Writers Centre building, in the centre of Dublin at 19 Parnell Square. History The foundations for the Irish Writers Union were laid in 1985 when Jack Harte, at that time principal of Lucan Vocational School, Co. Dublin, set up a writers' advisory office, availing of the Social Employment Scheme. Harte employed a secretary and two workers in this office, one of whom, Joe Jackson, went on to become Ireland's first Writer-in-Residence. From the outset, the aim of the project Harte had in mind was to establish a Writers' Union and an Irish Writers' Centre. Trade involves the transfer of goods and services from one person or entity to another, often in exchange for money. Economists refer to a system or network that allows trade as a market. An early form of trade, barter, saw the direct exchange of goods and services for other goods and services, i.e. trading things without the use of money. Patricia King (trade Unionist)
Patricia King is an Irish trade unionist. Born in County Wicklow, King worked as a trade union organiser for many years before being appointed as the Dublin organiser of SIPTU (Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union) in 2004. In this role, she was centrally involved in a major dispute involving workers at Irish Ferries in 2006 and 2007. In 2010, King was elected as vice-president of SIPTU, the most prominent post held by a woman in the union to that point. She also served on the RTÉ Authority, the National Roads Authority, the Dublin Airport Authority and the Apprenticeship Council. Des Geraghty
Desmond Geraghty (born 27 October 1943) is a former Irish politician and trade union leader. He was president of SIPTU from 1999 to 2004. He stood unsuccessfully at the 1984 European Parliament election for the Dublin constituency as a Workers' Party candidate. Jimmy Somers (born November 1939) is an Irish trade unionist. Born in Cabra, Dublin, Somers became active in the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU), soon being elected as a branch secretary,Mary Raftery,Labour's Legacy, 1 December 1983 and leading the party delegation to Dublin Trades Council. Somers also became active in the Labour Party, in which he was a leading supporter of Michael O'Leary. He stood for the party in Dublin North-West at the 1973 Irish general election, then in Dublin Central at the 1981 Irish general election and the November 1982 Irish general election, but was not elected on any occasion. Edmund Browne
Edmund Browne (born 1937) is an Irish former trade unionist. Browne became active in the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU), and was elected as Vice President in 1983, defeating Des Geraghty by a margin which surprised his supporters. In 1990, the ITGWU merged with the Workers' Union of Ireland to form SIPTU (Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union), and Browne was elected as joint General President alongside Bill Attley. John McDonnell (trade Unionist)
John McDonnell (born 1943) is an Irish former trade union leader. Born in Mallow, County Cork, McDonnell began working in the local Érin Foods factory. He joined the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU), and in 1974 was elected as secretary of his local branch. He focused on supporting union members in the food processing, local authority and health industries, and gradually came to national prominence. In his spare time, he completed a degree in economic and history with University College Cork. The ITGWU became part of SIPTU in 1990, and McDonnell was appointed as its south west regional officer, the largest region in the union. McDonnell stood to become general secretary of SIPTU in 1997, defeating Brendan Hayes and Carolann Duggan. Along with Hayes, he was considered part of the "mainstream" of the union. William A. Attley (born 5 April 1938) is a former Irish trade unionist and football referee. Born in Rathcoole, Dublin, Attley studied at the National College of Industrial Relations.
