Des Geraghty
Desmond Geraghty (born 27 October 1943) is a former Irish politician and trade union leader. He was president of SIPTU from 1999 to 2004. He stood unsuccessfully at the 1984 European Parliament election for the Dublin constituency as a Workers' Party candidate. A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is a person who has been elected to serve as a popular representative in the European Parliament. Labour Panel
The Labour Panel ( ga, An Rolla Oibreachais) is one of five vocational panels which together elect 43 of the 60 members of Seanad Éireann, the upper house of the Oireachtas (the legislature of Ireland). The Labour Panel elects eleven senators. Election Article 18 of the Constitution of Ireland provides that 43 of the 60 senators are to be elected from five vocational panels. The Labour Panel is defined in Article 18.7.1º (iii) as "Labour, whether organised or unorganised". The Seanad returning officer maintains a list of nominating bodies for each of the five panels. Candidates may be nominated either by four members of the Oireachtas or by a nominating body. The electorate consists of city and county councillors and current members of the Oireachtas. Jimmy Somers (born November 1939) is an Irish trade unionist. Born in Cabra, Dublin, Somers became active in the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU), soon being elected as a branch secretary,Mary Raftery,Labour's Legacy, 1 December 1983 and leading the party delegation to Dublin Trades Council. Somers also became active in the Labour Party, in which he was a leading supporter of Michael O'Leary. He stood for the party in Dublin North-West at the 1973 Irish general election, then in Dublin Central at the 1981 Irish general election and the November 1982 Irish general election, but was not elected on any occasion. Luke Kelly
Luke Kelly (17 November 1940 – 30 January 1984) was an Irish singer, folk musician and actor from Dublin, Ireland. Born into a working-class household in Dublin city, Kelly moved to England in his late teens and by his early 20s had become involved in a folk music revival. Returning to Dublin in the 1960s, he is noted as a founding member of the band The Dubliners in 1962. Known for his distinctive singing style, and sometimes political messages, the ''Irish Post'' and other commentators have regarded Kelly as one of Ireland's greatest folk singers.
