Central Italian
Central Italian (Italian: ''dialetti mediani'') refers to Italo-Romance varieties spoken in the so-called ''Area Mediana'', which covers a swathe of the central Italian peninsula. ''Area Mediana'' is also used in a narrower sense to describe the southern part, in which case the northern one may be referred to as the ''Area Perimediana'', a distinction that will be made throughout this article. The two areas are split along a line running approximately from Rome in the southwest to Ancona in the northeast. The Monti Ernici (Italian: "Mountains of the Hernici") are a mountain range in central Italy, part of the sub-Apennines of Lazio. They are bounded by the valley of the river Aniene to the north-east, that of the Liri to the east, and, from south to west, by the valleys of the and Sacco. They are the natural border between two central Italian regions, Lazio (north-east of the province of Frosinone) and Abruzzo (central-western province of L'Aquila). Paliano is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Frosinone, in the Lazio region of central Italy. History Paliano was the seat of a branch of the powerful Colonna family whose head was Lord, then Duke, then Prince of Paliano. Their fortress dominates the town. In 1556 papal forces captured the town, which was governed for a few years by Giovanni Carafa, nephew of Pope Paul IV, as Duke. His wife, , was the Duchess of Paliano celebrated in Stendhal's novella of the same name. Upon the death of Paul IV in 1559, Marcantonio Colonna regained the town.
