Sergi Durán
Sergi Durán Bernad (born 23 June 1976) is a former professional tennis player from Spain. Career Duran was able to qualify for the 1997 Wimbledon Championships but had to battle hard in the qualification stages, winning his match against Gastón Etlis 9–7 in the final set and beating David Nainkin 11–9 in the deciding set. He faced British wildcard Andrew Richardson in the opening round and lost in straight sets. He competed in the singles and doubles (with Gabriel Silberstein) at the Croatia Open that year but wasn't able to get past the first round in either. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. 1997 Wimbledon Championships
The 1997 Wimbledon Championships was a tennis tournament played on grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London in the United Kingdom. It was the 111th edition of the Wimbledon Championships and was held from 23 June to 6 July 1997. The championships saw the inauguration of a new No. 1 Court, the third court to be named such in the club's history. To commemorate the new stadium, all the three-time or more singles champions were invited to a ceremony marking the opening of the new court and were presented with a silver salver. Ten of the thirteen surviving eligible champions attended: Louise Brough, Rod Laver, Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, John Newcombe, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Pete Sampras. Gastón Etlis
Gastón Etlis (born 4 November 1974) is a former tennis player from Argentina. The right-hander won four career titles in doubles, and reached his highest ATP rankings of World No. 114 in singles May 2000 and World No. 17 in doubles in January 2005. Etlis' greatest success in singles came in the final tournament of his singles career, reaching the semifinals of Costa do Sauípe in 2003. Tennis career Etlis turned professional in 1993. David Nainkin
David Nainkin (born 20 September 1970) is a former professional tennis player from South Africa. Career Nainkin never reached a final on the ATP Tour but made it into the semi finals of the 1995 Nokia Open in Beijing, before losing to Michael Chang. He had the best win of his Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam career at the 1996 US Open (tennis), 1996 US Open when he upset countryman and number nine seed Wayne Ferreira 6–4, 6–4, 2–6, 7–5 in the opening round. Andrew Richardson (tennis)
Andrew Richardson (born 14 March 1974) is a British former professional tennis player, and now a coach. Career Richardson competed in the singles draw of a Grand Slam three times, all at Wimbledon and on each occasion as a wildcard. In both 1992 and 1998 he lost in the opening round, to Marc Rosset and Hicham Arazi respectively. However, in the 1997 Wimbledon Championships he reached the third round, with wins over Spanish qualifier Sergi Duran in straight sets and then another Spaniard Juan Albert Viloca, in five sets. He was eliminated by countryman Greg Rusedski in the third round. He was more successful as a doubles player, winning five tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour. Gabriel Silberstein (born 17 October 1974) is a former professional tennis player from Chile. Biography Early career As a junior he was a strong performer and most notably finished runner-up in the boys' doubles with Marcelo Ríos at the 1992 US Open. He won his first Challenger match aged 17 and in 1992 won a Challenger tournament in Ribeirão. Professional tour In 1993 he began competing professionally and made his first ATP Tour main draw appearance the following year at Santiago. He was one of the successful qualifiers at the 1995 ATP German Open, a top-tier event now known as the Hamburg Masters. Dominik Hrbatý (; born 4 January 1978) is a Slovakian former professional tennis player. Hrbatý reached the semifinals of the 1999 French Open – Men's singles, 1999 French Open, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No. 12 in October 2005. Karol Kučera
Karol Kučera (born 4 March 1974) is a retired ATP professional male tennis player from Slovakia. He achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 6 in September 1998, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open the same year. In 2020, Kučera was elected an MP of the National Council of Slovakia representing the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities movement along with a fellow former tennis player Ján Krošlák and Romana Tabak.
