Sergei Gukov
Sergei Gukov (russian: Серге́й Гу́ков; born 1977) is a professor of mathematics and theoretical physicist. Gukov graduated from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) in Moscow, Russia before obtaining a doctorate in physics from Princeton University under the supervision of Edward Witten. He held a Long-term Prize fellowship of Clay Mathematics Institute at Harvard University (2001-2006) and during 2007-2008 was a member of the school of mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. Since 2007, he has been professor of mathematics and theoretical physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Starting 2010, Gukov was elected as an external scientific member of the Max Planck Society at the MPIM, Bonn. Clay Mathematics Institute Long Term Prize Fellowship
Clay is a type of fine-grained natural soil material containing clay minerals (hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates, e.g. kaolin, Al2 Si2 O5( OH)4). Clays develop plasticity when wet, due to a molecular film of water surrounding the clay particles, but become hard, brittle and non–plastic upon drying or firing. Most pure clay minerals are white or light-coloured, but natural clays show a variety of colours from impurities, such as a reddish or brownish colour from small amounts of iron oxide. Clay is the oldest known ceramic material. Prehistoric humans discovered the useful properties of clay and used it for making pottery. The Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ, ja, 日本数学会) is a learned society for mathematics in Japan. In 1877, the organization was established as the ''Tokyo Sugaku Kaisha'' and was the first academic society in Japan. It was re-organized and re-established in its present form in 1946. The MSJ has more than 5,000 members. They have the opportunity to participate in programs at MSJ meetings which take place in spring and autumn each year. Teiji Takagi (高木 貞治 ''Takagi Teiji'', April 21, 1875 – February 28, 1960) was a Japanese mathematician, best known for proving the Takagi existence theorem in class field theory. The Blancmange curve, the graph of a nowhere-differentiable but uniformly continuous function, is also called the Takagi curve after his work on it.
