Selle (Scheldt Tributary)
The Selle is a river in the departments of Aisne and Nord, Hauts-de-France region, northern France. It flows into the Scheldt at Denain, southwest of Valenciennes, and approximately 20 km from the Belgian border. It is one of several rivers in France with the same name. The river originates in the north of the ''département'' of Aisne, near Molain and flows northwest to its confluence with the Scheldt. It is long. History In 57 BC, the Selle was the site of the Battle of the Sabis between Julius Caesar and the Nervians, Atrebates and Viromandui. In the Middle Ages, the river was a boundary between the lands of Hainaut and Cambrai. In World War I, during the Hundred Days Offensive of 1918, the German Army had taken up positions along the Selle near Le Cateau. Linn Selle (born 5 September 1986 in Havixbeck) is president of the European Movement Germany. Education After graduating from the University of Bonn and Sciences Po with a bachelor's degree in political science, Selle completed a master's degree in European studies at the European University Viadrina. The La Selle thrush (''Turdus swalesi'') is a species of bird in the family Turdidae endemic to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (split between the Dominican Republic and Haiti). A skulker of broadleaf and pine forests around 1300m, it is limited to a small and declining population in the inland Dominican Republic, as well as a relict population in Haiti. Etymology Its name is derived from Pic la Selle, Haiti's highest point. Distribution ''Turdus swalesi'' is found only on Hispaniola. Selle Royal Spa is a company from Vicenza, Italy, founded in 1956 by Riccardo Bigolin, producing saddles for bicycles. The Selle Français (SF) is a breed of sport horse from France. It is renowned primarily for its success in show jumping, but many have also been successful in dressage and eventing. An athletic horse with good gaits, it is usually bay or chestnut in color. The Selle Français was created in 1958 when several French riding horse breeds were merged into one stud book. The new breed was meant to serve as a unified sport horse during a period when horses were being replaced by mechanization and were transforming into an animal used mainly for sport and leisure. William Christian Sellé, (1813–1898) was a Victorian doctor of music, composer and for forty years Musician in Ordinary to Queen Victoria. Selle (Somme Tributary)
The Selle (; also spelt Celle in the Oise) is a river of Hauts-de-France, France. It is long. Rising at Catheux, just north of Crèvecœur-le-Grand, Oise, it flows past Conty, Saleux, Salouël and Pont-de-Metz before joining the Somme at Amiens. In many places along its course, the river widens to form or fill lakes, much appreciated by anglers and gravel extractors. Several water-powered mills can still be seen including a paper-mill at Prouzel. Brown trout thrive in the clear waters of the river.
