''Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia'' is the third album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. It is considered to be the first album in the group's discography to have their signature sound which was achieved by using low fidelity recording techniques. It is the only album to feature drummer Bruce Smith. Background After the group's previous releases failed commercially, the band's budget towards production began to shrink considerably. 500 original copies were pressed that were funded by the band, similar to previous releases. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". Lo-fi (also typeset as lofi or low-fi; short for low fidelity) is a music or production quality in which elements usually regarded as imperfections in the context of a recording or performance are present, sometimes as a deliberate choice. ''Sandbox'' is the second studio album from American indie rock band Guided by Voices. Reception Editors at AllMusic rated this album 2 out of 5 stars, with critic Brian Egan writing that the band "took a short step back" from their previous album and that the songs "ultimately fail to register". Byron Coley of ''Spin'' pointed to the work on ''Sandbox'' to declare that Guided by Voices is "one of the sharpest sounding angle-pop bands out of the Midwest since the days of Green". ''Same Place the Fly Got Smashed'' is the fourth album by American indie rock band Guided by Voices. In James Greer's book, ''Guided by Voices: A Brief History: Twenty-One Years of Hunting Accidents in the Forests of Rock and Roll'', band leader Robert Pollard cites this album as having some of his best songs, describing "Pendulum" as "my favorite lyrics I've ever written." Lyrics and music The sample "You brought me down, you and your family. I did not!" used at the beginning of "Airshow '88" came from the movie ''Shattered Dreams''. The made-for-TV movie came out in 1990, which starred Lindsay Wagner. Frontman Robert Pollard describes the release as "a concept album itha linear story" about an alcoholic who commits a murder and is eventually executed for his crime. Robert Ellsworth Pollard Jr. (born October 31, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter who is the leader and creative force behind indie rock group Guided by Voices. In addition to his work with Guided by Voices, he continues to have a prolific solo career with 22 solo albums released so far. Charles M. "Mitch" Mitchell III (born December 25, 1959) is an American guitarist, songwriter and producer, best known as the lead guitar in the early lineups of Dayton, Ohio, band Guided by Voices sporadically from 1983 to 1996. Kevin Fennell
Kevin Fennell (born March 13, 1959) is an American musician from Dayton, Ohio best known as the original drummer for the indie rock band Guided by Voices. Career Fennell joined the original trio composition of the group, He performed with the band between 1983 and 1996, and since the reunion of the "Classic Lineup" in 2010. He appeared to perform at the band's "final" Dayton, OH performance in 2004. He did not, however, appear at their final concert overall in Chicago in December 2004. Fennell has also performed drums on Tobin Sprout's first two solo albums. Fennell rejoined the revived band in 2010 for a reunion tour and later album releases ''Let's Go Eat the Factory'' and '' Class Clown Spots a UFO''.
