Seiyō Ogawa
is a Japanese photographer, printer, and publisher who was a pioneer in photography of Buddhist sculptures and cultural properties in the Taishō and Shōwa eras. The name Seiyō is a pseudonym which was given to him from his master Maruki Riyō; his real name was . Career Seiyō Ogawa was born in Himeji city in Hyōgo Prefecture in 1894. Though his father's family was of the samurai class, he lost the father in childhood and was brought up by his mother. After graduating from primary school in Himeji, he moved to the house of his mother's cousin, Hino Yūzō, who operated a photo studio in the town Arima. He started helping Hino's work, and learning photography under him. But he had his heart set on becoming a painter. In 1910 he moved to Tokyo to learn the skills of oil painting. Yungang Grottoes
The Yungang Grottoes (), formerly the Wuzhoushan Grottoes (), are ancient Chinese Buddhist temple grottoes near the city of Datong in the province of Shanxi. They are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao. The site is located about 16 km west of the city of Datong, in the valley of the Shi Li river at the base of the Wuzhou Shan mountains. They are an outstanding example of the Chinese stone carvings from the 5th and 6th centuries. There are 53 major caves, along with 51,000 niches housing the same number of Buddha statues. Additionally, there are around 1,100 minor caves. A Ming dynasty-era fort is still located on top of the cliff housing the Yungang Grottoes.
