Seixal Municipality
Seixal () is a Portuguese city and municipality, located in the district of Setúbal, in the metropolitan area of Lisbon. Its population includes 184,269 inhabitants (2011), in an area of that includes six parishes. It is situated across the Tagus River estuary from Lisbon. Its seat is the city of Seixal, a centre of 31,600 inhabitants situated along the Rio Judeu. The present Mayor is Joaquim Santos, elected by the Unitary Democratic Coalition since September 2013. History The toponymy ''Seixal'' comes from a type of smooth stone (''seixo'') that is found in rivers; the name evolving from the name used to describe the geomorphology of the region. Since the Roman era, the Tagus bay has been a region of human settlement, from many of the archaeological discoveries at Quinta do Rouxinol, in Corroios, and Quinta de S. Lisbon Region ( pt, Região de Lisboa, ) is one of the seven NUTS II designated regions of Portugal, which coincides with the NUTS III subregion Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Paulo Da Gama
Paulo da Gama (; ca. 1465 in Olivença, Kingdom of Portugal – June or July 1499 at Angra do Heroísmo, Kingdom of Portugal) was a Portuguese explorer, son of Estêvão da Gama and Isabel Sodré, and the older brother of Vasco da Gama. He was a member of the first voyage from Europe to India, led by his brother, commanding the ship ''São Rafael'', which would be later scuttled in the return trip. Paulo da Gama joined the '' São Gabriel''. His brother brought him to the Terceira Island of the Azores and stayed with him until his death, before he returned to Portugal in September 1499. Paulo da Gama is buried in the monastery of São Francisco in the city of Angra do Heroísmo. Corroios is a civil parish in the municipality of Seixal in the district of Setúbal, Portugal. It is part of the Lisbon metropolitan area. The population in 2011 was 47,661, in an area of 17.11 km². Corroios remains as the second most populous town in Portugal, after Algueirão-Mem Martins (note: this ranking includes only ''vilas'' ownsand excludes ''cidades'' . The town is located on the south side of the Tagus River, opposite Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Almada () is a city and a municipality in Portugal, located on the southern margin of the Tagus River, on the opposite side of the river from Lisbon. Sesimbra () is a municipality of Portugal, in the Setúbal District, lying at the foothills of the ''Serra da Arrábida'', a mountain range between Setúbal and Sesimbra. Barreiro Municipality
Barreiro () is a city and a municipality in Setúbal District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 78,764, in an area of 36.39 km2. Barreiro has a view of the city of Lisbon from Avenida da Praia and a riverside area called Alburrica. The mayor since 2017 has been Frederico Rosa, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 28. History There are records of the village of Barreiro from as far as the 13th century, when the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword promoted its settlement.
